The clue is in the title "VII", RPG's had been mainstream before it, probably you just didn't want to play them.

And that's only counting ones I played before FF7 came out.  I'm sure some Sega fans can enlighten us on which Sega RPGs were more important than FF7.  FF7 added FMVs, which is a non-gaming feature.  It's like saying the XBox 360 is an innovative gaming system for being the first console with Twitter and Facebook.

actually before FFVII JRPGs are popular, ever heard of Final Fantasy Three? (which is final fantasy 6 btw) it was way popular back in the day.

Then there is the Phantasy Star and Shining Force games, Diablo and thats just off the top of my head.

Fair enough it's your list so I'll not go further off topic on RPG discussion.

 

@the post above, I know I was merely stating it didn't make RPG's mainstream.

So, Bungie are famous for not only having one of the biggest FPS on a console today, but for also creating the first FPS? Wow! I didn't know that one!

So it does seem that they have a claim to fame.

Okay, prove that RPG's were not mainstream and became so mainly because of FF 7; being repeated ad nauseam on the internet doesn't make it true.

Almost 4million sales in Japan.
Over 3 million sales in US
Almost 3 million sales in Others.
+ a number of spinoff games, and also... a movie.

THAT is how mainstream FF7 was, and still is.
Still (i think), no RPG can match it in sales, and before it... no RPG could either.

Added some of the suggestions (left a few off because I didn't feel like looking for release dates or just didn't feel like putting them on there).

And again, this list is not definitive and does not include everything. I know I miss things, that's why I'm adding suggestions. :-p

A lot better list but you need to add Sim City and Civilization (1 or 2)....   Oh and it is GoldenEye 007 not Golden Eye (just a little picky when it comes to that game).
