Forums - Gaming - I'm considering getting into the Splinter Cell franchise. A few questions!

Hi everyone! Ever since I saw Splinter Cell: Conviction during Microsoft's E3 Press Conference and how flipping awesome it looked, I've been thinking of maybe checking the franchise out. I very rarely buy a game from a franchise without playing it's predecessors first, and I wanted to ask people who have played Splinter Cell extensively, what are the games like? How do they play, are they comparable in some way to any other franchise?

Also, what console should I optimally get them for? From what I've understood, the early games are by far the best on the original Xbox, but I don't have one, so I was thinking of getting Gamecube-versions because I prefer the GC controller to the Dualshock (I have both PS2 and GC). So any and all info you could give me on these games would be very helpful.

Thanks a bunch.

I played Double Agent and thought it was meh.

Convicion though, looks awesome.

I bought the original Splinter Cell on Xbox and it was my game of the generation after Smash Bros Melee. Really amazing game. Bought the second version on Gamecube and then the 3rd on Xbox and didn't play more than 2 hours of the one I had on Gamecube and 5 minutes of the 3rd version I bought on Xbox. I think the novelty of an amazing sneak/action game had worn off and I had gotten bored of it rather than it being a case of the other two being terrible. I would still suggest you get the original though. I think it came out on Gamecube but I'm not too sure.

It did come out on GC... but I heard the GC versions sucked.

Get the Xbox one... PS2 aint too shabby either.

You have a 360, yeah? Aren't they semi-backwards compatible? The xbox versions were miles ahead of the others.

They play like MGS... sorta. But Sam Fischer is much more athletic than Snake. You'll be hiding in the shadows with night vision turned on 90% of time. Chaos Theory is the best of the original trilogy.

Keyword being semi. I don't want to get games if they turn out to not work properly :/

You've got a 360, right? I'm pretty sure the first four games are backward-compatible now. I would get the Xbox versions of all of them. The only possible exception is Double Agent, which actually has a 360 version. The difference is that the original-Xbox version has a splitscreen or online coop campaign, while the 360 one has extra multiplayer modes.

If you still want to choose between Gamecube or PS2, it depends on your priorities. I don't think any of the PS2 games have splitscreen, and the graphics are absolutely horrible compared to the other two versions, and levels are much smaller, but it does have online. The Gamecube versions have everything the same as on Xbox, including splitscreen in Chaos Theory and Double Agent, but no online modes.

It's also worth noting that there's a Wii version of Double Agent, though I can't speak to the quality of that one as I haven't tried it.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I love the first games, but Double Agent is a crap...

I think that you should buy all the xbox versions (they are 3 games, and later you can buy Double Agent for the 360, since you have a 360).

Splinter cell is like Metal Gear Solid because of the stealth things, but Splinter Cell is more technique and immersive than Metal Gear Solid, and Metal Gear Solid is much better because of the storyline and characters.

And prepare yourself, because this game requires intelligence, the game will makes you lost your patience sometimes .

I think there's a list somewhere. I'm 99% sure they're all compatible with 360. Splinter Cell is the third best selling xbox game, afterall...
