I bought the original Splinter Cell on Xbox and it was my game of the generation after Smash Bros Melee. Really amazing game. Bought the second version on Gamecube and then the 3rd on Xbox and didn't play more than 2 hours of the one I had on Gamecube and 5 minutes of the 3rd version I bought on Xbox. I think the novelty of an amazing sneak/action game had worn off and I had gotten bored of it rather than it being a case of the other two being terrible. I would still suggest you get the original though. I think it came out on Gamecube but I'm not too sure.
