Yes you can die and go to war at the age of 18, but I think it's too soon after getting your drivers license. Drinking and Driving is too scary.

How about allow drinking before you're allowed to learn to drive.

DING DING DING! Winner right there.

In my province its 19, and it should be lowered to 18. There should be no age when supervised by your parent or guardian.

I think it is the most ridiculous thing to put an age limit on drinking after you reach an age where your are deemed old enough to vote or make legal decisions on your own.

I kinda skipped the middle part of the discussion but, concerning very young drinking and small amounts of alcohol...

When I was a baby my parents used to slip a few drops of rum in my milkbottle, before bedtime. It helped me sleep better and from what I've heard, more parents have done that. A few drops really do not harm anyone.

I think drinking is kind of like sex. You start when you are ready. I'd prefer to see the agelimit of drinking rather as a pointer then hard-law. Just like sex. If it's consensual and not dangerous, let it be.

And about that controlled environment... well...

Of course there will be uncontrolled houseparties. But teenagers now get the chance to drink in bars, pubs, clubs, wherever. There, they generally will be supervised by barpersonell. True, houseparties will still be uncontrolled but at least not all teenagers will be drinking uncontrolled.

The way I see it, if you can go to war and die for your country at 18 then you should be able to have a few drinks at that age too.

That is the best argument I have heard.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

1. Drinking in moderation is known to decrease your risk of heart disease and prolong life.

2.  What other steps are you willing to take to decrease violence in your society?  Plenty of violence is committed without nary a drop of alcohol.

Actually that increases violence much worse. Ever hear of the prohibition? Ever realize that the Mafia was creadted BECAUSE of prohibition?

Drinking is only dangerous when idiots who don't kwno how to drink drink. The way to avoid this is to learn from a young age.
