Forums - Nintendo Discussion - id Boss: 3rd-Party Wii Development "Not Really Justified"

He's right.. No game comes to mind (3rd-party speaking) that is a must have for the Wii ATM, or a huge seller for that matter..

id Boss: Third-party Wii Development "Not Really Justified"

id CEO Todd Hollenshead remains unconvinced that there's a good reason for "independent, Wii-centric" development. He's willing to hear someone out, he just hasn't heard a good argument for it yet.

Hollenshead, in an interview with GameSpot, was asked if the Wii's meteoric sales and success inevitably meant a shift in resources toward third-party development more suited for that platform. Putting it gently, Hollenshead said no.

" If you look at the data, the Wii is Nintendo—and then everybody else. And then among everybody else, it's licensed properties - and then stuff that people lose money on. So, for a really original, game-centric IP, if you're a third-party developer, I would say, "Show me what makes such a compelling case for the Wii. "

That's not to say he ridicules Nintendo or the platform. Actually, he brings up a point I think we'd all do well to keep in mind: "Sometimes people lose sight of the fact that almost every company doesn't try to be all things to all people. Nintendo isn't trying to be all things to all people either.

Of course, this will be the year The Conduit finally releases, published by Sega. But Madworld (also Sega) despite a generous run-up of hype and reasonably good reviews, hasn't made the kind of splash on Wii analagous to a typical multiplatform drop on the 360 and PS3. That underlines another point Hollenshead made:

" Even if we make an awesome game, there's still a question as to whether we're going to justify our investment. And also, I mean, if you look at the market, the type of games we traditionally make, those games are selling record numbers on non-Wii platforms. "

Would Madworld have done so on PS3 and/or 360?

Cool.

Well, there ya go.

Better write down "game-centric" as another really stupid buzzword...

Let 3rd parties keep largely ignoring 50% of the console market and let's see where things end up. I'm sure iD will be fine (not really a surprise that they don't care much given their background), but that is not the case with many other 3rd parties.

I wonder how many 3rd parties will be left at the end of this gen, other than PC developers and consolidated developers like EA (who keep losing money) and Activision.

Then by the time the next gen starts, the remaining developers will be fighting against lack of brand recognition from millions of new gamers who never played one of their games. It will be interesting to see how that part turns out too.

Not every single 3d party has to invest on the Wii or consoles. Id bussniess is on PC (just look at the sales of Quake on 360)

Well, he wasn't bashing it.

I'm left indifferent. Meh.

Third parties are only making things worse for themselves.. Not supporting Wii means that the console has no support or fanbase for their IP's and the genre in which they specialise in.. If third parties had supported Wii from the start just like Red Steel, it sold over a million copies yet third parties ignored it..

If third parties had looked at that and thrown some support in to get some games out the door by the end of 07 or at the very least in 08, they'd have their support base, the users and the market would be there and they could have a very healthy income stream..

I hope they don't ignore Wii 2..

Just one more thing:

if you're a third-party developer, I would say, "Show me what makes such a compelling case for the Wii.

Here is what makes a compelling case for the Wii:

1- It has nearly 50% of market share.
2- It's the platform which sells the most 3rd party software.
3- It's the platform with the cheapest development costs.
4- Good quality 3rd party titles have had success on the platform.
5- By developing for the Wii, you'll make your company and franchises known to many new gamers, and keep the previously existing ones mindful of them. The alternative is to let Nintendo regain most of the attention and brand recognition.
6- Focusing on the other platforms is proving financially disastrous.

Aren't those enough reasons to make a serious effort with Wii development?
