Forums - General Discussion - I am a liberal and I'm proud

I'm a bit sick of feeling like I'm always in the wrong for my political views. Well, I just want to say I am proud to be liberal.

I am an atheist, I am pro-choice, I think pre-marital sex is acceptable, I think war should be used only in extreme circumstances, I support gay marriage, I think all people from all races, creeds and backgrounds deserve equal rights, I support better gun control, I enjoy the occasional drink, I read the guardian, I like Obama, I think prostitution would benefit for being legalised, the same for some of the less harmful drugs, I support the freedom of speech, I like renewable energy and I think it should be supported... and I'm proud.

Just because I support these things doesn't mean I don't have any morals, or I don't have good intentions. I'm a generally nice guy, people always enjoy being around me and I am an extremely hard working student (some may say a nerd).

Just because some of my views are a little liberal/controversial doesn't mean I'm a backwards thinking person. I know sometimes I get a bit angry and heated, but usually something has to really annoy me first to set me off. I am sorry for when that happens.

My respect for you has risen greatly, as I share many of the same views as you.

Cool, Liberalism for the Win!

yay, people are being positive. I was so scared that I was going to be hated for this, but I just had to post it.

Thanks Vetteman and scifiboy

When you're feeling down remember, "Liberal" is only a dirty word in some parts of the world;)

I believe myself to be in the same political ideology as you, but you should know that many of your positions transcend political spectrum positions.

On a side note, do you feel you are in the political wrong on these forums or in real life? Mainly because there are only 3 or 4 real right wing guys and 3 or 4 real left wing guys on these forums.

On this site mostly.

My uni coursemates and my friends at home are all pretty liberal. My family is fairly conservative, but we rarely talk politics. I do know a few extremely conservative people in real life though that oppose my positions. I know that some of my ideas are outside the norm though.

you sound like a real dutchman, or atleast like most people i know ^^

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

I'm pretty liberal myself, but I don't feel like I'm in the wrong, or anything. The thing is, I study Government & Politics at college, and so I know that there really are a wide range of views out there, and we often debate in class (which is far harder than on a forum, as you can't bail and you don't have a long time to think about things)., and so I know that when you get into the realms of areas where very few have an understanding, there is rarely a consensus.

What's more, the real world is far more mature than this forum. If people in my politics class functioned like we do here, well, it just wouldn't function. After all, my politics teacher used to be a member of the socialist workers party, and now Labour, and yet he's able to teach and get along with the ultra conservatives and the ultra Liberals in our class, and those people respect him as a teacher.

I often find myself biting my tongue around my grandparents, though. My parents are fine, as they share some of the same beliefs as me (only on a social scale, sometimes things get a little heated when it comes to discussing economic policies).

I come from a different background to most, though, where most of my friends and family are widely interested in politics.

my familys political views are like this:

Me: Liberal (leaning towards voting for the Green party)
Mum: Centerist (votes for whoever she thinks will best treat the NHS)
Dad: Centerist (used to be a member of the Labour party, dont know who hes voting for)
Sister: Liberal (not as liberal as me, but we agree on many issues, she wont be old enough to vote at the next election)
