Forums - Sales Discussion - How long will the PS2 hold the WW sales record?

@witeout that means the DS is still selling when it's 9 years old, i think by the time it is 7-8[xmas2011-2012] nintendo will have a DS successor, so it wont be selling much in 2013. Like i said, the GBA was on track to sell close to, if not more than ps2 but had it's life cut short by DS/PSP. The DS will have at least a 7 year life before a successor, i think it should pass 120mil in 2010, and should pass ps2 [at about 135m] by the end of 2011. Wii i think is harder to predict but at best it could be about level with DS at this time... that means it has to sell 30 million a year for the next 4 years [with 20m this year finishing] however if we are going by an "at best" estimation i reckon DS will be a further 30 million ahead of Wii at that point [also selling almost 30mil p/year] wow, if nintendo manage 60m profitable hardware sales per year for the next 4-5 years, they are going to make a sh*tload of money even without the games/extra perephrial profit.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo gives the DS a longer life than they've given the iterations of the Game Boy line. It's performing amazingly, and the full potential of the system has been nowhere near realized yet. You are right that 9 years may be pushing it, and I see it getting 7 at absolute minimum.

Does it even count? Should we be comparing Handhelds to home consoles?

As long as the PS2 is still on the charts.

Oh, I'm not trying to deny the PS2 its place in history.  It DOES have the highest sales numbers ever (so far) and it did so as the LEAST powerful system of its generation. (Well, I'm not sure about the Dreamcast.)

I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to baseball trivia, but I doubt that Mickey Mantle still has any records on the books.  But we (in the USA anyway) still know his name, because he's a freaking legend.

Technically the Ps2 was the least powerful, but the Gamecube was limited due to it's 1.5 GB game discs. It had a more powerful CPU and GPU, but what can you do with a 1.5 GB game disc?

Use 2 (like RE4 did).  It's not as if this was like the N64 cartridges, man.

The same thing the PSX/PS2 did when confronted with a large game: use multiple discs.  Example: Enter the Matrix.

couldn't Wii disks be dual layered too, making nearly 3GB (at least 2.5)

Wii disks arent 1.5 gb , those where the Gamecube disks TWRoO . Also the DS and the Wii isnt the PS2s nightmare , in best case its the PS3/PSPs nightmare :P

This is my view as well. In which case I don't see it being beaten this generation by any of the 3 consoles.

Why shouldn't it count?  I am very interested in hearing your argument.
