Forums - Gaming Discussion - Almost bought a Wii today.

You've already set yourself to get a PS3. You may as well continue that pursuit but immediately begin saving for a Wii as well now that you feel it may also provide you with compelling entertainment.

The merits to getting a Wii now and PS3 later are you'd have a game system now and are no longer waiting and the PS3 may again receive a price cut or better bundle options. Wii may also become even more scarce than it already is closer to the holidays.

Either way, the decision is ultimately up to you and what you feel is the best use of your money and patience.

Hi HELLFISH, welcome to the world of VGCharts

Looks like you started a "leo-j fights the rest of the forum" thread, that happens to all of us.

All I can say is GAMES GAMES GAMES, if your one of those super rational types make a list for each console and give points for each game, add up the points and maybe you´ll have a winner. Also look at ebay, both systems are very reliable so you might save a buck or two and won´t have to worry about it.

@ leo-j: Just because your paranoid doesn´t mean we´re not out to get you.

Is a lot easier to save for a Wii than to save for a PS3. If it was me (and in the hypothetical case I couldn't afford both), I would get the Wii.

But, seeing that you have some money saved, you may get the PS3 first. Saving $250 is a lot easier than saving $500.

Get a Wii. I love my Wii. I never want to let it go. And Mario will just make it worse... Then SSBB... Then NiGHTS...

I'm a Nintendo fan, but I'm an objective one, as I own 4 PCs and a PS2 with just as many games as I have for my Wii.

Here's the breakdown.

Wii = $250
PS3 = $600

Wii games = <$50
PS3 games = >$60

Wii controls = more comfortable controller for most, more versatile controller, more abilities (1 less axis of sensing, yes, but the Sensor Bar is able to negate most of that issue, not to mention sense actual 3D positioning and therefore be used for aiming).

PS3 controls = No rumble (presently), more motion sensing abilities, but so far it's been fairly mediocre and buggy (oftentimes has to be done an exact, certain way or else it doesn't work at all).

Wii = Complete GCN backwards compatibility + backlog of many NES, SNES, N64, TG16, and Genesis games.

PS3 = PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility (making for a VERY large backlog of games), but not 100% complete.

Wii = Lower resolution, less powerful graphics

PS3 = Extremely high graphical ability, much higher resolution, but very low RAM (making it difficult for developers to USE PS3's abilities).

Wii = 512MB flash storage

PS3 = 60/80GB hard drive storage

Lastly, the PS3 has little to nothing of value out YET (besides Resistance, if that's even your cup of tea). It WILL have a lot of value out, but for what price? It depends on if $60+ is worth it for a game in your view.

Meanwhile, the Wii has a larger catalog of valuable games out so far (although not MANY that are widely accepted as "good"... most are "cult hits" or casual games (but still extremely fun!)). Its games are cheaper (many MUCH cheaper), and it also has a very strong library on the way. Most everybody can agree that the Wii is lots of fun, and when you can say that AND promise that a strong library is on the way, while the PS3 only has the promise of a possibly strong library... yeah, that's saying a lot.

In the end, I think you'd likely have a better time gaming on the Wii, and it'd hurt your wallet much less. As in, by the end of the generation, you will likely find yourself $350-$1k better off for deciding on the Wii, depending on how much gaming you do.

 We have a little saying in Montana...

That was full of more bullshit than a rodeo floor. Do you have any idea what you're talking about? I mean, I'm not going to go on a fanboy rant, because that's incredibly pointless, but you found every possible opportunity to put down the PS3.

So, Resistance is the only good game? That must be why PS3 games are getting worse reviews than Wii games.

Oh, wait.....damn.

Plus, the PS3 is $500. You sound like you went to E3 06, trolled the forums for 6 months, and then completely stopped reading anything after that.

Normally I wouldn't care, but you can't look at that post and not see how biased it is.

@leo-j

Let me clarify. It has low USABLE RAM. Sure, it has 256MB split between two different chips. However, that destroys how easily usable that RAM is. If it was one chip that averaged the two together, it'd be much easier to dev for. Problem is, developers have to twiddle with two different kinds of RAM that both operate MUCH differently. Developers find that as a negative thing. Looking at it from a developer's point-of-view, this is how I'd see it.

PS3
-CAPABLE of more power, much more beautiful games, and far superior AI
-Difficult to develop for
-As a result, typically won't live up to potential unless large amounts of $$$ and effort are put into development

Wii
-Less power
-Follows Nintendo tradition of being easy to develop for
-Result: Takes less effort to put out games that at least compete with PS3's offerings

Completely from a developer's standpoint - not considering potential sales whatsoever - Nintendo systems are a better choice to develop for. Nintendo puts together their systems and dev packs with the developer in mind. Competitors - of any sort - traditionally have not (at least, not to the degree Nintendo has).

Either way, right now, developers and publishers are stuck on the idea that BIGGER = BETTER. However, that's been changing slowly this generation as the Wii has been getting more and more attention.

Anyways, back on topic... Personally, I think PSWii guys are nuts. I identify more with Wii360-ers, myself (planning on purchasing an Elite once I can afford it and the hardware issues are mostly worked out (which is slowly happening as we speak).

Let me tell you something

80% of the site is full of nintendo fanboys. 80% of the people will tell you to get a wii. I on the other hand wont, metroid prime 3 is an amazing game, the ps3 doesnt have any amazing games yet, if you want get a wii Im not stopping you but the ps3 is going to deliver soon my friend.

QFT.

That's easy. Buy a 360!!

Kidding aside, the way I see it is that both the PS3 and Wii will provide you with great games you'll enjoy. PS3 will have better graphics, but you can purchase the Wii and some games now (and get more games as Christmas presents).

It's not like you'll regret it. Wii will almost certainly win this generation (not trying start a flame war guys...) so there will be lots of great games in the future too.

Later when the PS3 drops in price and has a better line-up of games, you can get that too. They'll offer different experiences and that's great. That's assuming your not spending all your money on the lastest Wii games of course.

Stick to the Wii. It has some Great games now, and Many more to come. Why wait for delivery?

HELLFISH...do we get a cookie if we fight for you some more. We can go on like this all night. How about you weigh in on the issue and make it to your second post ever. Could help resolve some of the discussion.
