Forums - Sales - Nintendo Wii owners, it's time to acknowledge third party failures

yeah i can agree with that but still because all games take different amounts of money to develop its easier to make the the successful claim based on a constant figure. In this case its sales. But i guess i agree with you.

However this argument has so far been based strictly on sales and thats why im using the 1M sales as cutoff.

To be blunt, 1 Million is a moronic cutoff for a game in particular a game with the development costs of the Wii ... At 1 Million sales you're pulling in (as a publisher) somewhere between $15 Million and $25 Million in revenue, and a large portion of Wii games cost less than $5 Million including marketing costs. In no way should a 400% return on investment be required to call something successful.

In contrast, there are many PS3 and XBox 360 games with development budgets that surpassed $40 Million ... Is it fair to call those games successful when they only covered 50% of their costs?

Yes, I was gonna make exactly the same point.

@ Happysquirrel and Cheebee

I understand your points and i completly agree with them so please stop assuming that i dont know that fact. However i am using sales as the measure of seccess because that is what is usually used by most people. But since when did this devolve into a thread discussing how to measure a games success?

those are legitimate REASONS, which is different than EXCUSES, and at any case such reasons are one of many other unmentioned reasons.
But what I have noted is that a sequel tends to sell more than an original IP, which is weird, if you compare it to the movies.

thats because movies rely more on the stories, so u dont really go to a sequel if you dont know the stories

Ok, Mad World and God Hand are pretty much one in one with each other.

Second, Xbox, GC, PC and PS2 owners are now the majority of the gamers on the Xbox360 and PS3 for whatever their reasons.

The second statement is supported by reports from Nintendo calling near total ownership of all industry expansion for 2008, and that an understood syntax that the HD Twins are 'hardcore' systems that appeal to the 'hardcore' audience which is a symbiotic term hanging on the more descriptive term 'incumbent consumers'.

Hardcore Gamer is simply a term that can be defined as a gamer familiar with gaming; this is for the sake of waylaying any future semantic conundrums.

The end result is that the HD install base in summation (Xbox360 and PS3) does not equal or surpass the install base for the Ps2+Xbox+GC+PC (gaming). As for this particular case, I believe God Hand was released for the Ps2 exclusively, during 2006 or 2005, but I'm pretty sure at it's release the install base on the PS2 alone was double the install base on the Xbox360 and Ps3 currently.

Unless your saying that new consumers or an expanded audience that would be interested in God Hand which I'm using synonymously with Mad World found the HD Twins this cycle to be what they wanted, then your opinion does not measure up to history.

It is my conclusion that history as far as numbers go for Ps2 install base and God Hand sales go is not disputable. The hypothesis that barely 2,000,000 people are studied to be new consumers between PS3 and Xbox360 signals then that in potential Mad World could of seen 2 million LTD on the HD Twins combined. But the odds of that is the same as you falling off Earth because your upside down.

So that's up to 19 games (if I counted correctly), but they account for 9 of the 30 million sellers. However, of the next 10 or so games that are over 900,000 (many of which I expect will eventually top 1m), there are none.

Looking at those top MG titles, they seem to tilt heavily towards games released early in the Wii's life cycle, which makes sense. The went for the WiiSports market, with cheap and easy games, but saturation made it harder for later MG titles to break through.

Around the Network

@misterd.

That is probably a good way of looking at it.... although it is also worth noting that really it's mostly the best titles that have won through.

Mario and Sonic is a very high quality game, and I am still considering a purchase myself as a Wii Sports alternative.

(worth noting I am going by what I have percieved by listening to opinions of the game owners... I haven't played any of these games)

Carnival games is supposedly good but lacks depth.
Deca Sports is the same as Carnival Games, except perhaps slightly better.
The Rayman rabbids series is held in high regard at least for 1 and 3 (2 being the better seller can be attributed to the good brand name the 1st one built up)

Game Party and Big Beach Sports have perhaps done too well as they seem to be mediocre.

And finally the Active life thing I know nothing about, but it looks shovelwareish.... though I could be wrong of course. I actually was going to colour it green like I did with some of the other "fitness" games based on the title, but then I looked at the game and it doesn seem to be more a mini-game thing than a fitness game. (Ie the difference between Wii Fit, and a cross of Wii Sports and Play)

----

I also only used the top 200 games, and took out the nintendo ones (so probably about 160 games in total).... so there may be more but they clearly were not as successful.

Oh, and in case anyone asks... I didn't highlight Carnival Games Mini-Golf for a reason... I read th page and it seems to be a full fledged mini golf game, rather than a compilation of seperate things.

Isn't it time when Wii fanatics finally admit that most of core gamers choosen diffrent platform and a lot of people choosen Wii for Wii fit or Wii sports type of gameplay which makes "hardcore" gaming fanbase much more limited than 50 milion units sold suggests.
