Forums - Sales Discussion - 2008 European Video Game Market by Country (GfK)

Italy stands out as a pretty weak market on both PC and consoles if you look at per capita numbers, but the rest of Western Europe loves games (xcept Porgtegal but thats due to poorness).

Awesome that it's out! Great find, BKK!

Interesting to see that the Spanish market declined YoY, despite strong growth everywhere else.

Also, suecia = Sweden, correct?

The crisis has hit Spain the hardest amongst the rest of the countries.

Italy could quite possibly overtake Spain this year to become the fourth largest market in Europe.

About Italy, nobody remember the numbers given by prosugno, but they were those:

2008 Totals
1 NDS: 1.404.500
2 WII: 688.500
3 PSP: 590.000
4 PS3: 402.000
5 360: 398.500
6 PS2: 359.000

If, i sum correctly, it gives not 2,898m (the number in the table of adese), so i ask some questions.

About Italy, we also find that (posted in Hardware Italy thread) :

Here, it give the famous total of 2,898m, so what are the true numbers of gfk for 100 % of the italian market  ?????

The chart comes out to 2.894m, so seems like the numbers above are legit. GBA could explain the small difference. I'm now highly confused as to what the real Italian LTDs should be.

Do you have any revenue numbers for Ireland too? :)

Coincidentally ERA's 2008 report released yesterday contains Irish data for the first time :) Only total software units (4.17m) and value (€141.6m) though, no hardware data. Still, it's great to get actual data from Ireland, time to update the OP (I overestimated Irish software units at 5m, not too far off though).

Why? Because Spain is different ... It's hard to explain really, not sure myself. It's similar to what has happened around the globe but with synergies on other factors. For example, the majority of people buy their houses over here, it's the first thing that you do, it's not like in Germany where there is a healthy rent market. The rent market is small because of laws that protect the tenants more than landlords, so few people decide to rent their houses out and speculated, invested in them.

OK, so are we sure that all the numbers in others countries are for 100% of the market ? For France, it seems right, but not sure it's obviously the case for the others countries.
