Blu-ray has some problems, like high price, and lack of a library, but as others said, DVD dealed with the same problem against VHS.
The only problem is the speed of the Blu-ray takeover. It is supposed to reach 50% market share by 2012! Do you honestly believe that we won't have Internet connections fast enough for HD video streaming around that time???
Blu-ray is obviously a sustaining successor of the DVD, but it is "physical storage", as a whole that is getting disrupted. |
Well quite honestly...No. In three years? Not in the United States. Urban areas(City) maybe. You do realize that just for example, Where I live we didn't get 'Digital Cable' of any kind until this past year? And that it's only 6M and as fast as other kinds you can get in other places. And I live about 20 minutes away from a sizeable area.
Speed is an absolute necessity for downloadable distribution to work. The speed isn't there yet. To upgrade the telecommunications in this country to the level that Digital Distribution needs to work, is a serious overhaul. One that won't be done for quite sometime.
Remember, Broadband internet has been around for quite sometime. It's finally starting to see the rapid adoption rates. Broadband within the past two years - three years has finally passed Dial Up in marketshare. We have YEARS to go before Digital Distribution becomes anything more than a 'nice feature'.
