Forums - Sales Discussion - ps3 Re5 blew out 360 version in japan

75k for an non RPG title in japan is pretty decent. well done 360..

ps3 seems to have finally found some footing though- which is kinda crazy coz i would have thought the recession would have affected ps3 sales.. oh well.. i guess Videogames are recession proof after all :)

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

It's gonna be tough... the game's gone from this week preview.

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

this is a "duh" result. First of all, it's japan, and second, xbox has never had a resident evil game on it, so obviously there is going to be more excitement for this game among playstion fan base.

Well honestly, what were you expecting?

This. No big deal. Considering the install base, those 360 numbers are actually impressive.

Yes, but I didn't expect the margin to be that high.

PS3 userbase is less than 3:1 over the 360.

The margin here is 5:1 in favor of PS3. That's pretty good.

I think you forget that Japan is a little bit different than the rest of the world. Since both consoles have horrendous sellthrough vs. the Wii, there's a much higher likelihood that gamers own both a X360 and a PS3 vs. the West (where it's less than 10%). Having said this, most multiplat games are heavily skewed toward the PS3. One must also remember that ported games from the X360>PS3 and vice versa have horrible sales as well, which would indicate that if there's exclusivity on any one game, gamers typically pick it up for console #1.

A few examples on sellthrough ratios (from Famitsu):

Devil May Cry 4 310,012 55,259 5.61

PES 2008 275,069 17,530 15.69

Gundam Mousou 2 264,451 34,988 7.56

GTA IV 195,779 59,893 3.27

DBZ: Burst Limit 163,010 25,051 6.51

Samurai Warriors 3 125,791 10,000 12.58 Released on PS3 first, 5 months ahead
Soul Calibur 4 120,213 53,403 2.25

CoD4: Modern Warfare 113,957 54,742 2.08

Virtua Fighter 5 97,321 23,776 4.09 Released on PS3 first, 8 months ahead
AC: For Answer 87,683 40,391 2.17

Armored Core 4 84,849 21,096 4.02

Assassin's Creed 82,459 55,261 1.49 Released on X360 first, 2 months ahead
Eternal Sonata 49,132 70,435 0.7 Released on X360 first, 15 months ahead
TES Oblivion 49,114 72,274 0.68 Released on X360 first, 2 months ahead
Avg: 178,248 39,927 6.62

As you can see, many games are heavily skewed toward the PS3. Especially the higher up on the list. Titles that were major IPs for the PS2, and sold above 300,000 on the PS3 have been typically skewed heavily toward the PS3 more than middle-tier releases, such as a Call of Duty, or Grand Theft Auto. A 5:1 ratio in favor of the PS3 is within the realm of typical data, and is in fact, somewhat lower than normal, given how large the game is (since it's first week may be larger than any multi-plat LTD thus far in Japan).

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

SO4 passing Blue Dragon is beyond a lock. Famitsu's monthly charts, ending on 3/1/09 stated that Star Ocean 4 is a mere 7,000-8,000 units away from surpassing Blue Dragon at 203,000, and that was with only 2 weeks of data.

I'd say it's very likely it'll pass Blue Dragon this week, and not look back. It should pad the lead anywhere between 225,000-250,000 units, given how well Tales of Vesperia, and The Last Remnant have done since their launches (big debuts, horrible drops, and slow but sure legs afterwards in the vein of Blue Dragon).

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

And how is this a surprise?

Nice find, but if I understand correctly you post this to prove the ratio for RE5 sales PS3vs360 in Japan is "normal" or "expected"?
