Forums - Gaming - JRPGs...What the hell happened to you?

Hopefully the release of Dragon Quest X on wii will give JRPGs a boost so that their makers can choose one system to develop on.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."

Until the HALLMARKS of the genre don't come out JRPG's aren't doomed

FFXIII & DQX are the hallmarks of the genre.....we can't deem the fate of JRPG's this gen till the ones that will probably bring the JRPG fanbase to this gen come out!
_______

thats like saying.,.....the FPS genre was doomed due to COD 3 sales before Halo 3 even came out

_____

or like saying the platformer genre was doomed as the new crash bandicoot flopped....before SMG even came out

n so on

I don't think they are doomed, few genres ever are, (well maybe westerns and musicals)

I don't want JRPG's to go away, I want them to come back with something new.

They will happen.  Especially if Western developers for some strange reason start to make them.

@theshrike

I think the problem with cutscenes in JRPGs isn't so much the length of them as much as it is the writing and voice acting in them.  JRPGs these days tend to suffer from terrible VA and cornball dialogue though I think that has more to do with the localization than the actual writing.  Look at MGS4, every few people I knew considered lengthy cutscenes in that game a glaring flaw.

This pretty much covers what I have in mind when I wrote that post.  Which pretty much brings me to another problem I have with JRPG cutscenes: facial expressions/lip syncing or should I say lack of them.  Other than Lost Odyssey and The Last Remnant, the lip syning has been nothing short of horrendous in current gen JRPGs.  Star Ocean 4 in particular also suffers from a lack of facial expressions.

For me it's not just the dialoge which does make me chuckle sometimes but it's the lead characters. In FFXII the only character I could relate to and actually cared about was balthier. Vaan got on my nerves and I know people like Fran but she completely annoyed me from the way she looked, to her dialogue. Tidus was whiny and childish etc. MGS4 was a bigger hit because Snakes attitude is more western imo.The characters aren't really designed to appeal to western audiences, some people like that and some don't.

Trust me. It's not about quality why JRPG's sales dropped. It's really about the fact that the main JRPG console right now isn't Japanese. They will wait......trust me.

I think JRPG's arnt evolving, story and gameplay wise so they get stale especially when when the same character persona's in appear in every JRPG

For me the only good JRPGs ive played this gen are Lost Odd and maybe Blue Dragon ( would be a cert except Marumaro is fucking annoying )
But i suppose we can judge whats happened to JRPGs when FF13/Versus is released, and SE start something new... or when they start FF7 remake
