@theshrike I think the problem with cutscenes in JRPGs isn't so much the length of them as much as it is the writing and voice acting in them. JRPGs these days tend to suffer from terrible VA and cornball dialogue though I think that has more to do with the localization than the actual writing. Look at MGS4, every few people I knew considered lengthy cutscenes in that game a glaring flaw.

For me it's not just the dialoge which does make me chuckle sometimes but it's the lead characters. In FFXII the only character I could relate to and actually cared about was balthier. Vaan got on my nerves and I know people like Fran but she completely annoyed me from the way she looked, to her dialogue. Tidus was whiny and childish etc. MGS4 was a bigger hit because Snakes attitude is more western imo.The characters aren't really designed to appeal to western audiences, some people like that and some don't.
