I don't want JRPG's to go away, I want them to come back with something new.

They will happen.  Especially if Western developers for some strange reason start to make them.

I think the problem with cutscenes in JRPGs isn't so much the length of them as much as it is the writing and voice acting in them.  JRPGs these days tend to suffer from terrible VA and cornball dialogue though I think that has more to do with the localization than the actual writing.  Look at MGS4, every few people I knew considered lengthy cutscenes in that game a glaring flaw.

This pretty much covers what I have in mind when I wrote that post.  Which pretty much brings me to another problem I have with JRPG cutscenes: facial expressions/lip syncing or should I say lack of them.  Other than Lost Odyssey and The Last Remnant, the lip syning has been nothing short of horrendous in current gen JRPGs.  Star Ocean 4 in particular also suffers from a lack of facial expressions.
