Forums - Sales Discussion - Is the PS3 selling badly? Why do you think it is/isn't?

If they're aiming for a simultaneous release, don't expect FFXIII until 2009. The game is still being programmed, and with the game being targeted towards the end of 2008 if it was Japan first, localization could take another year just to get all of the languages set.

The 360 is leading by over 6 million units. The PS3 selling only 400k more units over a nine month period isn't really going to do all that much. At this rate of 400k/9mo it would take eleven years for the PS3 to surpass the 360.

Final-Fan: You're right about the "let alone" part, my mind must be wandering, heh.

If the PS3 had a 20K lead per week every week, it would take 310 weeks to make up the difference. That's nearly six years.

It also needs to be said that the 400,000 extra PS3's were largely due to the PS3's large launch in Europe.

It changes nothing. These units are already sold. X360 has launch too.... Current pace is descent - almost 400k a month with $500 price tag is solid. I expect 9-10 million before end of March... In March hits MGS4. If Sony decide to lower the price ($399 or even $349) we will see SPECTACULAR boost in sale.

Here is my wii theory..

Lets say the GC has a 40million install base.

Those 35million-40million want a wii(I didnt ps3 was my first ps console)

Now, as people get the wii there friends seem to enjoy it. Then they want a wii, sooner or later everyone has or wants one. Meaning the install base "may be double of what GC sold", but there's a twist in this theory. If it is truly true that only GC owners want a wii, along with "some" casuals, this would result bad for nintendo in the long run(the price = fast sales).

Sony can actaully do something to stop or halt wii sales, and thats making the ps3 cheaper. The ps3 has some serious potnetial in sales, people want it and by people I dont mean 1 million or so. Im pretty sure that if the ps3 drops price not only will x360 owners buy it(thats if they arent fanboys), but even some wii owners(hardcore gamers) will go pswii. So its something to monitor especially in september.

Right now the ps3 is outselling 360 in World wide sales weekly. It is selling pretty good.

Now the holiday sales will clearly show how well the ps3 can sell(this I mean this holiday season), maybe as well as it did at luanch with some 400k sold in one week.

IMO would Sony had released a PS2.5 at 250 Euro/USD and prematurely killed the PS2, the PS2.5 may well have outsold the Wii, cutting off some of the Wii's lowend market.

IMO luckily they didn't and I can play Super Stardust HD in all of its 1080p glory. I think the benefit would only be temporary as the console would have a much shorter lifespan.

To Sony this would mean there would be less reason to own an improved display (HDTVs) and a much smaller Blu-Ray movie install base.

I think just let the PS2 and Wii duke it out for the lowend market and the XBox 360 and PS3 fight the fight for the high end market. Compared to the PS2 the Wii has the advantage of having not to deal with market saturation for many years to come and is considered something fresh, the PS2 on the other hand has the advantage of a much larger installbase dwarfing all other console rivals and a lower entry pricing.

PS3 vs 360 sales

Yea the PS2 was a real battle huh? They sold 900,000 units in 24 hours in Japan alone!! It took PS3 HALF A YEAR to do what PS2 did in 1 DAY!!

Price is a major fator in Japan. The PS3 is currently about performing on par with the original PSX in Japan at twice the price. The PS3 has totally outperfomed the XBox 360 for the highend market in Japan.

This shows there's a lot of potential for the PS3 in Japan with exclusive highly anticipated games like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, White Knight Story and Gran Turismo coming up within a year timespan. Bestselling titles like Resistance and Motorstorm are more geared towards North American and European customers. I also expect the PS3 to become increasingly popular in Japan with future price drops. With the PS3 having already marginaliyzed the XBox 360 in Japan despite the rival's one year headstart, the more anticpated highend multi-platform games will likely have more a positive effect on PS3 sales than on XBox 360 sales.

However the world is larger than Japan alone, according to Sony's figures the PS3 is outperforming the PS2 in
PAL regions which is quite extraordinary at twice the entry price.

 A. That is not true, pS2 launched at 500-600 euros (the euro didn't exist yet at that moment, so I use the equivalent amount in euros) at least in the Netherlands and I assume that price was also used in the rest of Europe.

B. The amount of units available at launch were far higher for PS3 than for PS2, so outselling it this early after launch is not very impressive at all when PS3 is readily available everywhere. If they still trend above PS2 levels in about a year you can come back to use that argument again.

@ koffieboon

Regarding pricing you make a good point, twice the price was more true for the US than Europe. Comparing
British launch prices the PS2 launched at 300 pounds and the PS3 is currently priced 400 pounds, so only 1/3
more expensive.

Sorry I never owned a PS2, so I never followed the pricing closely enough. Thanks for the correction.

PS3 vs 360 sales

Yes, the PS3 is selling badly!

If you compare the PS3 to both the PS2 and N64 (the past 2 follow ups to market leading consoles) you'll notice that the PS3 is selling at a slower rate than either console; this is so dramatic of an indicator because the market is much larger today than it was when the N64 was released, gamers are older and many of these games have more money (which could indicate they are more likely to buy an system early in its life when it is expensive).
