Forums - Sony - Why does the RE5 demo feel like a last gen game?

Wow, there seems to be a lot of disaffection with RE5's controls, and this is from message boards, ie. the 'hardcore' community.

Is it possible... that this game will... flop?

There are lots of control setups available so people will eventually find one they like or at least one they don't dislike too much.

I hate to sound like a broken record since it has been mentioned before and in other places, but RE4:Wii's controls were amazing compared to RE5's controls.  Aiming in RE5 is a pain (needs to be faster), aiming in RE4:Wii was not.

RE5 is amazing .

This is what I want reflected in the game:

If you watch it you will notice the guy is nearly always in his firing stance, most of the time he is not in it he is either flat out running or reloading.

I have played every single Resident Evil game, including RE4 on the Wii, and I still think the controls for RE5 suck ass. The game feels old and outdated. There is absolutely no reason to not be able to WALK and shoot at the same time just like cops and soldiers can do in real life. If you think that soldiers sit in 1 spot and shoot then you know nothing about combat at all. You would be a sitting duck if you never moved. We don't need to be able to run and shoot, but WALK...

"If you don't like me, bite me!"

They are playing it safe by sticking with the old gameplay style, but I'm wondering if it is a bit dated because it really does feel that way. You can't even strafe around a corner to get a better shot, you have to un-aim, re-position and re-aim again. They really screwed the controls up, but you can get used to that (except for melee, I think I'll be forever pressing L2 + R2 by accident)

But overall playin this with my best bud over the headset is really what sells it for me. Hilariously fun and intense.

You are an idiot. These are EARLY enemies: compare the earliest enemies in RE4 to the ones near the end of the game.

Also, not having 'free movement' and 'fast enemies' is not a "last gen" failing--it is a design choice which makes Resident Evil unique and, in MOST peoples opinions, incredible.

Not being able to walk while shooting i somewhat of an issue, but it doesn't really bother me.. Again, it is a design choice. REALISM =/= BETTER GAMEPLAY

RE4 Wii DID control better, but, well, it used a Wiimote and RE5 is stuck with a 360 controller; what do you expect? Different interfaces keep the controls from being comporable IMO

And of course the axe is cumbersomely swung, LOOK AT THE SIZE OF IT

sorry, i read it wrong, which was my bad.

still, having to stop and shoot has always been something in RE, and they should keep it that way.

Stopping and shooting isn't the thing about RE they should have kept.  The reason why the older (pre-RE4) were better is because you had the survival problem.  The game turned into a shooter when the purpose was switched from surviving/searching/saving/problem solving to shoot/save/kill everything/shoot some more/simple problem solving that is basically solved for you.

RE4 is a great game, but I am part of the camp that thinks RE4 isn't a real RE game.

well yes, thats what i'm scared of most. im scared that theyre going to sell out and milk the series to non RE fans by making it a shooter and not a survival horror. capcom, if your reading this, im more scared at your desicions than the actual game. thank you.

Oh, thank god. I'm not the only one who thinks this.

With you 100%. If it's survival horror, why am I in broad daylight? If it's a shooter, why can I not move while aiming? Why is the reloading system so god awful? Why would you put a laser sight in aforementioned broad daylight? If it's a hybrid, fair enough, but that doesn't excuse the lack of polish.

I've never really played the RE series, so I can't accurately scream SERIES MURDER!, but I can scream "GENRE MURDER!"

Look at Left 4 Dead. It's a zombie game. But it's good. It's innovative. The zombies don't move like elephants on pot. The tank is a much better miniboss than that strange THING with the axe.

The co-op seems nice, haven't tried it yet.

Perhaps part of this comes from the fact that I had just finished playing the KZ2 demo. RE5 felt incredibly slow in comparison.

Yeah but I just want to walk while aiming, I don't care if when I shoot the character stops, but while I'm just aiming I'd like to walk at least back and forth. Can you tell me you can't hold a handgun with two hands amiming and walk at the same time?

You do not walk while aiming, unless you are a mentally ill Spec OP. You walk with you gun ready to aim. When you want to aim and shoot, you stop and you aim and shoot. Simple as that.

RE5 (and 4 before it) has the most realistic shooting mechanics ever implemented in a game. RE5's point is not to mindlessly run and gun, but to avoid beeing overwhelmed. Because of the fabulous enemy hit response, you can use different weak points to set an enemy up for a melee attack, which calls for skill and boldness. It is as good as it gets really.
