Forums - Sales - Why does some people fear/hate the Wii?

Final Fantasy XXXIII? They have that many? Wow! Just wow!

If your mom is still alive and can play it when it comes out, then good for her.

Most hardcore gamers are selfish and they think that they are the only people that are allow to play games.

No. Everyone can play our games. We just don't want OUR games becoming THEIR games. Ya dig?

Agreed, 100% none of our HD games should go to wii in our opinions because then theres a good chance it wont go HD therefore we have a big problem.

Wii games can be good. In fact there are good Wii games, but they are few and far between. The problem is that soon Our games will become Their games. I.E. they will influance what games are made, not us, the gamers.

I really don't want game devs trying to please my mother over me.

Just watch once the Wii has over 50% market share things will start to change.

@Bolded- And thats whats scary. D:

Well, it seems that somebody is dealing with the problem i just described. But, sorry, I dont get it. And I am not playing dumb, I swear. What do you mean by "our games become their games"? Publishers, as far as I know, can handle more than one game at the time, so they can develop games for you and for your mom. And since she didn't use to buy games before it is a whole new business. She is a gamer too.

Can you explain yourself better? Are you saying that there will be no more GTA's, Halo's, Gears, God of War, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Zelda etc, etc, etc after the Wii reaches the 50% marketshare?

What i mean is you will see a lot less games aimed at you and me, and you will see more aimed at your sister, mom, and grandparents.

I'll use something as an example....lets see... I'll use the WWE

WWE used to be for adult males between the ages of 18-30.

Now it is for kids. WWE saw that kids are easier to please and will buy any crap with their favorite wrestler on it. Now the WWE is a watered down version of its former self. This could very well happen to the gaming industry.

Wrong. WWE games are dumbed down because the WWE has been dumbed down. It appeals more to children. Only a child could possibly find one of John Cena's jokes amusing.

In a nutshell, because some people think the dominance of the wii sales-wise will lead to more bad games and less good games. In reality though, its largely because those people dont have wiis and dislike other consoles *winning*

The Wii was my first current gen console. I'm really terrfied that within a few years 75% of the games that come out will be utter tripe. Why would game devs take risks on expensive HD games when they can crap out a flash game port? This is a serious matter that we are dealing with, and you people refuse to acknowledge it. The more influance the Wii has over the industry the more serious this problem becomes.

The game industry is slowly turning into the movie industry....

I agree with you ,but you shouldnt say such things in this website ......most of the moderators are wii fanboys and you can be banned because "hating on the Wii".

I really find it hilarious when a narrow group of gamers is terrified that gaming is becoming more mainsteram and people stop associating it with Geeks in basements. That is a good thing.

@Undying

Gaming becoming like movie industry? Because of the Wii ? You mean Games like Halo3, Gears of War 2 , Gran Turismo 5 are not big budgeted block busters that are targeting mass market? Because they are like Michael Bay movies (especially halo and gears).
Even in current situation there are plenty of brilliant, innovative and fresh movies coming out every year, games? Look at the best sellers on every console and you will find that innovation does not sell, at least Wii offers a chance to create something amazing with less risk of financial disaster, and some people do try and get success, Like Suda 51 with NMH or Capcom with Z&W.

The Wii scares me... T_T

I think the fear is legitamit...or legitamized by history. Take 2 says "We just can't ignore Wii's installed base" Basically, look what happened the the N64 with third party support, and the 64 was twice as powerful as the Ps1 (hint: horsepower really means nada) Look at what happened to the Cube and Xbox in regards to third party support and both the box and the cube were more powerful than the Ps2 (hint:horsepower means nada)

History shows us that the market leading console gets the most support. This is an inevitability, that has been replayed most recently with the DS and PsP and again this shows horsepower means nothing. PsP still gets third party support, but the majority of resources (and thus the better games) go to the DS.

The HD fanboys see this as a possibility and thus the Wii is a threat of gigantic proportions. So much so that when the Wii outsells either the 360 or PS3 its no longer news, When the Wii outsells both combined, its "well ONLY outsold the HD consoles by 150k" Fanboys will even go as far as to lump the PC with the HD consoles just to grasp at some sort of straw.

You can even see this in the arguments as to why the Wii is killing gaming or why it sucks. The arguments can usually be applied to the other marketleading consoles of the past (abundance of shovelware for example, graphics mattering more than anything else, meanwhile the console war winners have always been the least powerful machines) For the Wii somehow things are different. Which in all honesty, it isnt any different than any other market leading console.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

I think the Wii is very different from other market leading consoles .
First it sells almost only first party games and casual ones at that .Look at the Wii weight in the Take-Two ,EA ,Capcom ,Konami and other companies fiscal data ....its very low even with its monster sales.
Second it caters to other demographics ,different to the PS2 for example in a great way .
Third ,its not PS2-like regarding the rival consoles .....its truly a generation behind in the technical aspect. Its games can be good ,but will NEVER impress the other consoles users or the specialized press. It will always be "good ....for the Wii".

Still ,this could be a threat for gaming and as such is perceived by a lot of gamers. If all the other companies realize you dont need big budgets or inversion but a clean and winner marketing alone ,that the "blue ocean" is full of people ready to buy kiddie games and shovelware ....well theres a risk they can reallocate resources to that kind of software so screwing the HD consoles and PC.Mass market always follow the path of the minimum common denominator.Fortunately the core gamers behind the HD consoles are a powerful force still and buy lots more games that many of the casuals buying Wiis ,and that will keep some investement and projects on those consoles .....the good ,epic ,with great production values ,games .But for this to happen the core gamers must keep embracing the HD consoles and rejecting the Wii ...and thats what the other posters were expressing .

not anymore, sure some 1st party games will be 15million sellers, but now a lot of 3rd party games are selling great

not really, EA Sims are selling, RE is selling, Boom Blox, even PES 2008 was close to 1million even with something like 6 months late release!

this is your own opinion, ps2 needed a memory card in order to save, Wii does not, Ps2 had no channels and downloadable games etc, Wii has, also much improved online play, sending messages, storing of photos, and the most important of all, the controller has been improved a LOT!!

and the reason the Wii is selling is the controller, so Ps3 and Xbox360 have a last generation controller, if they had a Wii like controller they would have sold more as well, so the Wii technical cannot be considered as last-gen just because of the graphics, they are much better than Ps2 but not as good as Ps3of course, so graphics is just a disadvantage!!

didn't Mario Galaxy, Zelda and Metroid impressed the press that gave 9.7, 9.5, 9.5??

also, let's see what MH3 and Conduit can do! (which are 3rd party as well)

*there's no reason to hate the Wii as long as the HD consoles keep selling and getting great games

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^
