I think the fear is legitamit...or legitamized by history. Take 2 says "We just can't ignore Wii's installed base" Basically, look what happened the the N64 with third party support, and the 64 was twice as powerful as the Ps1 (hint: horsepower really means nada) Look at what happened to the Cube and Xbox in regards to third party support and both the box and the cube were more powerful than the Ps2 (hint:horsepower means nada)
History shows us that the market leading console gets the most support. This is an inevitability, that has been replayed most recently with the DS and PsP and again this shows horsepower means nothing. PsP still gets third party support, but the majority of resources (and thus the better games) go to the DS.
The HD fanboys see this as a possibility and thus the Wii is a threat of gigantic proportions. So much so that when the Wii outsells either the 360 or PS3 its no longer news, When the Wii outsells both combined, its "well ONLY outsold the HD consoles by 150k" Fanboys will even go as far as to lump the PC with the HD consoles just to grasp at some sort of straw.
You can even see this in the arguments as to why the Wii is killing gaming or why it sucks. The arguments can usually be applied to the other marketleading consoles of the past (abundance of shovelware for example, graphics mattering more than anything else, meanwhile the console war winners have always been the least powerful machines) For the Wii somehow things are different. Which in all honesty, it isnt any different than any other market leading console.
Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:
If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.
If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.
