Forums - Sales - Will PS3 eventually pass 360?

good games dont sell consoles.

just look how many kinects are sold despite its high price and poor/average reviews.

theres way more casuals than people who go on websites looking at which system will get which game the following year.

xbox will always have the price advantage but i think ps3 will go ahead simple because it will be supported longer than xbox will and it will be a dirt cheap blu-ray player.

The years of the PS3 being the cheapest Blu-ray player are over and won't return.  You can already buy a Blu-ray player for less than $100 and that price will continue to drop next year.

No one is buying the PS3 as simply a Blu-ray player anymore.

its still a 3d blu-ray player remember that, its the main reason i havent traded mine in. My blu-ray collection is quite good but just in case i get a 3d tv, now that would be fancy haha

Looking at the Gap now versus 2 years ago, it had closed by 2 Million.  So 1M a year, that's probably going to continue, I definitely predict a PS3 price cut in 2011, down another $100 in September.

360 might get a price-cut in before Sony this time reducing the impact Sony had last time when they were first to the price-cut war.  I really think that PS3 will be at an eventual tie with the 360 in the same Millions area, where either could be second place (the Gap right now is ~4M).

Wow, this thread is really old, 2007 it started-was this resurrected or something?

Microsoft has not really had a pricecut since 2008, so the first real price cut in 2 years, will probably have bigger impact than Sonys price cut, i could be wrong though. It will sure as hell not pass 360 any time soon though, but maybe in 2012-2013 it could happen.

Eventually yes but only after the Xbox 3 already has launched, and by then not many people will care.

2011 will be pretty much status quo in sales (12-13 million each for PS3 and X360). Both consoles will drop $50 down to $250 (Xbox 360 250Gb will drop to $200 in Europe and the Arcade is even cheaper) so neither one will get a price advantage. And the broader worldwide popularity of Playstation will be offset by the Kinect boost.

If hardware is a stalemate, it will be the 1st party games that make the differance.  Do you think MS can compete with Sony in that, i sure don't.

Funny because MS hasn't announced their full 2011 lineup, and Forza 4, Gears 3, a likely timed exclusive Mass Effect 3, and a rumored Halo remake among other games sound like one hell of a fall lineup. I think software will be pretty equal, especially considering how many people considered 2010 to be a PS3 favoring year by software, and sales are likley to end withing 500k (still in PS3's favor).

Funny i have yet to see you not side with MS in any thread.  Yes nice fall line up, what about the rest of the year ?

MS 3/4 games are nice but very lacking compared to Sonys.

Uncharted 3
Killzone3
Twisted Metal
Resistance
Motorstorm
Infamous 2
Move Heroes
LBP2
Ratchet and CLank
Socom
Last Guardien (if the gaming gods are kind)

And how many of those games will be released in 2011? I really doubt Sony will release all their shooter brands (Uncharted, Resistance, SOCOM, and Killzone) in the same year (this is the same logic as to why Gears 3 was pushed back), and games like Last Guardian have been delayed repeatedly. Also the only new IP is Move Heros, do you think sequels will push consoles that much?

Still you gave a list of 11 games, at least 6 will score above 9/10, and are blockbuster titles.

For 360 we have Mass Effect 3 (likely a timed exclusive if not a full exclusive), Gears 3, Forza 4, Kingdoms, Huxley, Prey 2, XCOM, Project Dragon (likely Panzer Dragoon-Kinect), Steel Batallion (Kinect), Dead Island, Dungeon Hero, and Mechwarrior. Not to mention there are rumors of a Halo remake, and in the past 2 years MS has always announced at least 1 mega title late (Forza 3, Gears 2 in the past), and MS could announce anything for the Kinect. Either way I have named 11 confirmed exclusive 360 titles, along with at least 1 very likely rumored game, and 1 likely timed exclusive. Of those confirmed pure exclusive games, at least 5 will score above 9/10, and are blockbuster titles. A possible Halo, or Mass Effect exclusive will balance that though.

Now you may argue that you never heard of these 360 games, but Forza, Huxley, and Dungeon Hero are all first party developed, and Gears 3 is first party published. Kingdoms is an exclusive from Crytek, and Prey 2 is a sequel to an existing 360 game which scored 9/10 and above on most websites. Se we know those are all good. Mechwarrior, XCOM, Panzer Dragoon, and Steel Batallion are all revivals of old franchises just like Twisted Metal and technically The Last Guardian are. So any of those could go either way, and Dead Island could be anything, but the trailer is awesome.

So don't hate the 360 lineup just because the games haven't been hyped for years, or aren't all sequels to existing franchises. At least MS is finally releasing some new IPs.

As I have shown, software is about the same fo PS3/360. It depends on preference, and we still dunno what Sony will do for the Move and MS will do for Kinect. So there is no real reason to beleive the PS3 or 360 will sell noticably more then the other, they should be roughly on par for 2011, which will make it very difficult for the PS3 to surpass the 360 in the years beyond.

P.S. I side for whichever console is being unfairly put down. I have yet to see you not put down the 360, so thats why you always see me stand up for it.

1.) Xcom is not an exclusive.

2.) Mass Effect 3 is not an exclusive or even a timed exclusive.

3.) Killzone 3,Uncharted 3 and Resistance 3 already have release dates.

4.) What the heck is Huxley?

5.) You mention the ps3 probably delaying its games, yet you still mention a game that is rumored for the xbox 360, and mention a few titles without a proper title yet.

6.) Last Guardian is not a revival of an old franchise.

As of right now, the ps3 has a better lineup of games for 2011. Of course this could change, but as of right now, Forza 4 and Gears of War 3 are pretty much it.

uh huh " i believe heading into Jan 2011 the PS3 will have the smallest gap it ever has staring the year" pretty much means you think PS3 has been beating 360, unless you fail to understand how sales work BHR.

The only person that matters on that list is ioi, and he has the PS3 ahead by 30k.

So how is the PS3 shipment gap going to be the lowest ever, going by how 360 has been outselling the PS3 WW for the last 13 weeks, forseeable 6 weeks, and then even thereon?

Doesn't add up.

so as i said it will have the smallest gap starting the year and its you who fails to understand how sales work last shipment it was 2.9M ending sept. with only 1Q left for this yr i doubt it will grow bigger than it was in 09 at around 5.2M and judging by how much progress ps3 has been making its possible for there to be no gap next yr both shipped and sold

just look at each starting yr how ps3 cut the gap down

beginning of each yr gap was

2007 8.7M

2008 7.3M

2009 7.5M

2010 5.3

2011 most likely <3.5-4M

as you can see the gap its clearly getting smaller, no mater what MS did, even in 08 when MS went to 199 and this yr with its relaunch and kenict it really didnt widen the gap

PS3 made a large gain when it went to just 299 in 09 and so far all of this yr i expect the same large gains like this with its next price cut

                                                                      Play Me

I don't know, it depends if Kinect hype dies off or not in americas.

Even if it should happen eventually, it won't be by much.

Nintendo Network ID: Cheebee   3DS Code: 2320 - 6113 - 9046

we know ps3 will do it eventually

the REAL question is: Will it be relevant when it does?

cause iof it passes 360 when the next gen is upon us, u cant get a more hollow victory then that....the great sony now stopped so low as to be only able to beat a once faulty console that doesnt sell in japan......only when its successor is out :P

6.) Last Guardian is not a revival of an old franchise.

As of right now, the ps3 has a better lineup of games for 2011. Of course this could change, but as of right now, Forza 4 and Gears of War 3 are pretty much it.

1) XCOM is console exclusive

2) Mass Effect 3 has not been confirmed to be a PS3 title as of yet. It may very likely be a timed exclusive, and I only counted this as a maybe since Fog of War assumes every PS3 game he mentioned will release in 2010, but cases like Gran Turismo, Killzone 2 and Shadow of The Colossus tell us this may not be the case.

3) So did a lot of PS3 exclusives which got delayed in the end. SOCOM 4 also does not have a release date yet, neither do a few other PS3/360 exclusives. This is a subjective debate.

4) A FPS from Microsoft, been in development for years, just unlike Sony MS doesn't talk about games it has planed for the next 5 years, they focus on the year of. Thats why everyone always thinks MS is doomed on a software from next year, every year.

5) I mention everything that is to be taken into consideration. There are games for Kinect in development for the 2011 calendar year, so they obviously count. I never excluded any PS3 games because one or two of them will likely get delayed into 2012, I just mentioned that they could get delayed.

-)However looking up, no one mentioned "The Agent for PS3", and "FFXIII Versus." There are rumors circulating that FFXIII Versus will be multiplatform, but the game should still be taken as a PS3 exclusive for now. Then again that game does have a 2012 release date, but "The Agent" may be released in 2011. So Plus 1 for the PS3, but it's still a close list.

My arguement wasn't that PS3 doesn't have a better lineup, it was that the lineup is similar in quality. It's too early to judge better software of 2011, as we don't know the story on many franchises (Halo Remake, Mass Effect 3, Future Kinect/Move software). The real debate is weather or not PS3 will surpass 360, and with Kinect being so ridiculously popular in Americas, and modestly popular in EMEAA, 360 has a slight edge in 2011 (just like Sony had in 2010). Someone claimed PS3 software will be enough to offset the Kinect effect, and push PS3 sales to above 360 levels, and I'm only pointing out software isn't that different.

6) Subjective, Shadow of the Colossus is a 2005 title. I consider Golden Sun an old franchise revival, 2 games in 3 years, and then 7 years for the third is a long time. When The Last Guardian releases, the last ICO franchise game will have been 6 years old, thats a pretty long time. Zelda, Mario, Halo, Pokemon, MGS, Gears of War, etc all see new installments within at least 3 years. However this point, it's not really relevant to the debate. It's just a supporting arguement saying that if you list "The Last Guardian" as a good game, based off prior installments (which it probably will be, Shadow of the Colossus was my favorite PS2 game), you can say "Steel Battallion" will also be a good game. Your free to beleive what you feel.

As for your last statement I have proven otherwise. As is 360 is looking to have just as many bluckbuster hits. The only difference I see in the lineups is that Sony is relying more on sequels to prior well received, moderatly selling franchises. However you are right about one thing, It's too early to tell.

Besides, the whole reason whis was brought up was to see if software can push PS3 sales to be above 360 by a significant margin. The only 3 million plus selling PS3 franchise that was named was Uncharted 3. It's nice Sony is pushing out a lot of great First Party games, but MS has just as many exclusives, and at least 2 MS franchises will sell above 3 million. Heck Forza and Gears will likely sell around 5-6 million copies each, thats about as well as half the PS3 exclusive line-up.

So if Halo is confirmed, and Kinect gets some good software, it's pretty likely that MS will still push more software in 2011 then PS3, and in terms of console pushing ability, that gives MS the edge. PS3 is a great system, and it's really unfortunate that great games like "The Last Guardian" and "Killzone 3" will go unappreciated, but thats how the world works..

Kick ass man, Logic always makes sence. Good to see smart posts like this.

Do you think Sony will reduce that shipment gap in 2011, or increase it? i.e. 2012 will the shipment difference be less then or greater then the 2011 shipment difference?
