Forums - Sony - Killzone 2 sales predictions

Kill Zone 2 = sales ltd 2 to 3 million.
No way is Kill Zone series is as popular as MGS series and its lifetime sales numbers will fall far short of 4 million+
Only series more popular than MGS series on PS3 are GTA series, FF series and GT series.

i think this'll be the best prediction i've made, written or unwritten. i've always said internet hype does not equal to good sales. i'm very much anticipating a confirmation on that to keep the fanboys quiet :P

Your week one prediction may be almost right.  Your lifetime prediction, however, is way off.

I've said it before in this thread, and I'll say it again:

If Uncharted can break 2 milion, why can't Killzone 2 break 1.5 million?

Especially when Uncharted has the stigma of being a Tomb Raider clone to those that know little about the game, and Killzone 2 is in a more popular genre (FPS vs TPS with heavy platforming elements)?

Also, how will Killzone 2 fail like LBP failed?  LBP is already at 1.65 milllion, and will sell at least 3 milion, if not 4 million when all is said and done.

Your lifetime prediction for Killzone 2 is going to be WAY off.  Even titles like Heavenly Sword managed to get close to 1.5 million (1.38 million, and it's also still full price in NA).  And Heavenly Sword is in one of the more niche genres out there.  The best selling Hack n' Slash game is God of War, at a mere 3.21 million units.

how is 3.5million sales of KZ a failure? KZ2 will make at least that, and if sonys marketing is right then i say it can hit 6million lifetime.

my prediction is such because it'll be frontloaded due to internet hype. after all the fans have bought it, i doubt it'll last long in the market due to the ton of shooters already out there.

What about Call of Duty?

Call of Duty 4 currently has higher total sales than MGS4, and is selling more weekly than MGS4.  Call of Duty: World at War is selling even better than Call of Duty 4.

Call of Duty 4 managed to sell extremely well despite the mediocre reception of Call of Duty 3.  Why?  Because it was a DAMN good game.  Excellent reviews and strong word of mouth gave the game legs like no other.

Assuming Killzone 2 lives up to the critical hype, and does become the best shooter out on the ps3 (and based on impressions on neogaf from those with review builds, this looks to be the case), why could it not do this also?  Why could it not have extremely impressive legs, leading to very high total sales, near that (and possibly even topping that) of Call of Duty?

Name a single game that has been extremely frontloaded due to internet hype?  The only ones I can think of are really bad games like Haze.  Games that had no legs to stand on because word of mouth was absolutely horrible.

Games like Call of Duty 4, Gears of War, Halo, and LittleBigPlanet had extremely long legs because their quality warranted it.  First week sales were high enough to get the word out about the games, and the games continued to sell for a LONG time.

And the shooter genre isn't overloaded.  The reason there are so many shooters is because so many people buy the damn things.  It may be up to marketing to differentiate the the top of the heap from the rest initially, but after that it's up to word of mouth.

And luckily Killzone 2 is recieving a large helping of marketing.  I work at GameStop, and we already have flyers hanging from the ceiling of our store with a giant Helghast and a blurb about the pre-order demo, as well as a wall of display cases behind the counter.

@makingmusic:

QFT: Good games never stop selling until years later. See how MGS4 is still going strong....

If KZ2 becomes what everyone expects it to be then there is no telling of when sales will stop.

PSN ID: T_Gears

End of 2009 ltd sales:

Wii = 67-68m

X360 = 38-39m

PS3 = 34-35m

Prediction: The PS3 will surpass the 360 on weekly sales after it drops to $299 on all regular weeks (no big releases).

that game had 3+ million confirmed pre-orders (world-wide) if you put together the various official claims from various retailers around the world

Over 9000 day one confirmed!
