Forums - Sales - MGS4 has SHIPPED 4.33 Million WW ------ Konami Reports - VG chartz SPOT ON!

@FishyJoe

While you are correct that its possible for MGS4 to have 710k - 810k copies on retailer shelves i don't think GTA4 is a valid example... after all GTA4 -- the biggest release this year sold 6 million copies in its first week. As such its not surprising that at the end of may retailers had stocked up on copies of the game which is expected to sell over 15 million copies easily...

Compare that to MGS4 4 months after the game was released --> will retailers really stocking more than 2 or 3 copies per store?

Anyway in the end MGS4 has sold extremely well and will pass MGS3 in lifetime sales -- possibly approaching or hitting the 5 million mark.

Kotaku reported a month or so ago that JP retailers were flooded with so many used copies of MGS:4 they were paying under $10 for used copies.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

I find hard to believe that retailers would still be accepting 450k MGS4s if there are still a million on shelves.

@DMeisterJ: What other 'Metal Gear' game? That would probably be Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection. It was released at the end of march '08 and according to VGChartz the game sold 180.000 copies to date, in the US alone.

I don't know how many copies the game sold in Japan, but it's likely 'The Essential Collection' is partly responsible for the difference between "slighty over 4 million" shipped for MGS4 and "4.33 million" shipped for the Metal Gear Series. Probably with the help of other, older, Metal Gear games though.

That's a specific japanese phenomenom. Non dominant consoles get bought for big-name titles, then both the console and the game get dumped back to the retailer. In Japan pretty much only casuals keep games after they are done with them.

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

 No, that's still shipped, not sold. Companies don't mention sold to consumers in their quarterly reports.

The 4.33M MGS numbers also includes the small amounts of other MGS games sold during that time such as the JP seperate MGOnline and the MG compilation that came out too.

Good to hear :) Seems Konami is pretty happy with the sales..

I count the 4.33 million as being sold. So well done MGS 4 on reaching 4 million milestone.
