What other Metal Gears could have shipped this quarter though? Someone please tell me that.

Technically, they don't need to be on store shelves for them to be considered shipped I believe. These could also include ordered copies that are in warehouses and shipping containers. Since these discs are made in China, it could be weeks before they find their way to store shelves.
But considering how many retailers around the world probably have copies of the game, it's perfectly reasonable for a million copies to be in the channel.
@Fishyjoe
ok thanks....that had me confused too....I mean who would ship MGs3 n stuff now! lol

MG: PO, MG: PO+, the recently released Metal Gear anthology and even copies of MGS2 and MGS3 exist in the world. All you'd need is to sell 200k of those combined over 6 months. That's not only believable, it's likely.
I had been guessing that MGS4 would hit about 5 million and match (or even slightly surpass) its predecessor, MGS3. Looks like that's where we're headed by the end of this generation. Not a rebirth for the franchise or anything, but at least it stopped declining at such a rapid pace.

@Bod
MGS3 Shipped 4.05 Million
MGS2 was at 5 Million
Its not a re-birth....its just a slight increase over MGS3

MGS: PO. A game that came out in 2006 is somehow still getting significant shipments? Same with PO+ and MGS2 and 3. Maybe some of the collection, but to think that they have any sort of significant impact on shipment numbers is crazy. >_>

It's great sales nonetheless. And it'll keep selling... this one will have long legs. Has it hit Platinum (or whatever they called) series yet?
@Bitmap Frogs
MGS4 can easily ship 5 Million yet imo....for that very reason

Yes, because we all know that Metal Gear Solid 4 will never sell more than its current total, and being one of the biggest and most popular PS3 games, I seriously doubt it could sell another 700k copies (especially with that holiday season coming, where people start buying games in smaller numbers). And all of this with a lower userbase? Expected, ehh?
