Forums - Sales Discussion - Does Anyone Actually expect the PS3 to Outsell 360 this Xmas?

PS3 will beat the 360 in total sells this holiday season. How's that for a nice simple reply??

Boycotting the following:

1. Yoshi: He ate my car and spit out a toaster.

2. Igglybuff: Totally false advertisement. You can have as many as you like they don't buff nothing.

3. the Terms Hardcore/Softcore... We're talking Video Games. Not Porn.

4. The term Casual as relates to Gamers: We make them sound like outsider's that happen to play games.  If that were the case they'd own a PS3.

5. Donuts.... Beacause I drink Beer...... and the biggest fan of Donuts hates Beer.

6. Boycotts: Their so lame.

xbox wins all three territories, yup, including japan. Xmas sales aren't about 'games of 2009' they are about games of 'xmas morning'. For three years all we have heard is that the PS3 has a strong lineup 'next year'.  Next year is on year too late.

Xbox doubles PS3 in USA, is 10% higher in Europe and 25% higher in japan the PS3.

PS3 price cuts in 2009 will be good for collectors, but the war will be over. Wii for the kiddies, Xbox360 for everyone else.

I totally agree with this. Same story this year as the last and the year before that. Most in this forum saying the PS3 has the better line up. Microsoft announces big titles and no ground is gained on the PS3's side after all. I expect more of the same doom and gloom for the opinions for the 360, then at the end of 09 someone will say 2010 will be the year of the PS3.

Beer and Bacon is fine... Beer and Pizza is better... Oh and Beer and Nice BBQ Ribs... Puuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

Xbox 360 takes North America and PS3 takes others and japan WITH an advantage worldwide for the PS3. It simply has better games this season and LBP will be huge.

Come now DMJ. It is common knowledge that Sony makes a TONNE on PSP hardware. Thats why they keep pushing the system even with the abysmal software rates. It's bringing in huge profit for them.

Whilst I'm sure Sony clears plenty on each PS2, I agree that software has dropped off massively. But basically the only place Sony is LOSING money is PS3 hardware. And the loss must be enormous.

I'm not sure where this "common knowledge" is.  I said it's reasonably possible that they are (or aren't) making money on Hardware.  It's never been spoken about whether or not they are.  It could be easy to assume that they are, and it could be easy to assume they aren't.  Or they could just be breaking even.  There hasn't been any news either way.  I'm not saying they are or aren't, but we can't go around in life assuming things.  We do know they are selling PS2 at a profit and PS3 at a loss, as there are numerous stories and posts on sites about that, but PSP goes largely un-noticed.

Why would they go through the trouble of redesigning and adding more expensive features onto a product that wasn't making them money?

The PSP-3000 wouldn't exist if the PSP didn't make them profit.

I woudlnt say it was bringing a ton of profit.  However i would think at worst they are making some profit per PSP.

I'm not saying that PSP is not making profit, but using the fact that they re-designed it as a reason that they are isn't that good.  This is Sony.  They've made plenty of stupid mistakes regarding the PSP, and still are.  The complete and utter lack of compelling software being the one thing.  Also the complete ignorance of the usefulness of the PS store to bring media to the PSP is merely a trailer store.  Capped off with the inane pricing of the system and games, compared to the DS, and they may just be making hardware revisions hoping for some Nintendo DS-Lite-esque craziness where a few ounces shaved and a brighter screen catapulted sales.

It certainly was, but is it still now? If Sony sold PS3 losing $100 each six months ago, it shouldn't lose very much now, HW costs drop quickly.

And in EU the price is inflated compared to what it should be simply adding VAT, even now that the Euro isn't strong as in the past. Most probably here in Europe PS3 has already stopped losing money for a while.

Sony lost hundreds of millions last quarter on the PS3 even AFTER taking into account large PS2 and PSP profits.

Question:

Is that Large PS2 and [Large] PSP profits, or is it just Large PS2 profits, and just making a profit on PSP?

It's misleading (most likely intentionally so), but I just want to see what you mean, as it can be interpreted in more ways than one.

Look at it this way.  When a piece of hardware is losing money?  What's the standard MO?  To add features?

No, infact it's the opposite.  To remove features.  Look at the PS3.

Afterall they're just finally getting around to trying to stop piracy recently... if they needed PSP games to make up hardware losses they would of worried about it quicker... rather then wait for the system to get on it's own feat without needing the hackability of it to push it out the door.
