Forums - Website Topics - What can we do to improve VG Chartz?

Well, any improvements you make to the games department has the potential to establish this site as (the much needed IMO) IMDB of games, so I'd really take a deep look at IMDB for features.

Off the top of my head, one fashionable thing you're totally missing are feeds and stuff. For both news and numbers. I wouldn't necessarily use them, but some people just love them.

Beyond that, I'm a proponent of, first and foremost, keep doing what you already do, always better.

Bring back the forum signature gif's for the front page totals, those were great constant easy advertising and I bet brought in a lot of users.

Enable IPbans.

Nice, I think the banners there are what me find VGChartz in the first place, actually.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

So no-one likes my rating system???

I'll elaborate:

Everyone starts off with a certain rating (a la Germany post-hyper inflation, new currency, everyone restarted with the same amount of money - 500 marks, I believe), say, 1,000 (like gamedev).

Now basically, whenever someone makes a really good post (informative, entertaining, etc) members can rate people up (only in increments of 1, btw). And if a member makes a particually bad post (fanboyism, swearing, etc) they can be rated down (decrements of 1).

The user rating gets displayed somewhere below the usersname on every post. It can encourage people to only make good posts, and it allows people to quickly skip crap posts.

Interesting, but surely open to abuse? People will just vote up their friends and people that have a similar console bias won't they?

My minor suggestions:

1 - The quote system still catches me out to this day, it's not obvious which 'quote' button is attached to which post.
2 - Get rid of the 'Z' in 'Chartz', it doesn't help to foster the image of reliability that the site deserves.

Yeah, *every* forum that has any kind of karma system it gets seriously abused. People start getting karma camped, make fake accoutns to raise their own karma, and so on, and then people start complaining and it just gets old and annoying quick.

Let's not aggravate people, Machina-AX ;)

I can't see that karma system working in any universe...except...like...a Care Bear universe...

ioi the sales bars are perfect in your signature, but why does it still come out with white on the site?

Email verification would be great, that generally works fine.

The forum isn't all that different to vbulletin phpbb and so on. Even if I installed a custom forum such as that I would block most of the features. I like the fact this forum is simple and totally integrated into the site. What is wrong with the search? Timezones are something I keep meaning to add, ignoring users and rating users I don't want to go down, editing of thread titles and so on do need attending to when I get chance. Overall I can't really see what the forum is lacking.

I don't want to derrail this further if you think it's off topic, so short response.

What I miss in search is the stuff usually available under "advanced search": searching by post, or by thread; using boolean operators in search; searching by poster; searching by time; combining all this stuff up.

Far more useful than that (everyone I know uses this stuff), is the "new posts" search usually avalable, that shows all posts since the last login. And then, there's the even more advanced ways to track threads one has or hasn't read.

These would go a long way into making the forum experience better. Integrating news comments, etc, into this would help get all these features there as well.
