Forums - Gaming Discussion - Obama drops $44k on in-game election ads

thekitchensink said:
This $44k may not be a ton of money in the grand scheme of things, but it's INCREDIBLY well-spent. Think about it--millions of people play these games. Let's say 20 million people play those games online.

Half of XBL gamers are probably underage to vote, and likely only about 60% of those remaining are from the USA, so that would be six million potential voters that would see these ads.

Assuming all of these voters were to vote for Obama after seeing the ads, that would be six million votes for .73 cents each.

Now, think about all the gamers outside of XBL that simply hear this news--here's a politician in the highest possible position that isn't going to go after games. In fact, he'll be supporting them. That's an untold number of votes right there, as well. I wouldn't be surprised if that got him another 1.5-2 million.

And all that just for $44k.

there is no way 20 million people played Burnout.

I say 2 million MAX.. and out of those 2 million, most of them are either too young to vote, or in the range of young voters with extreme low turnout ratio.

I won't say "money badly spent", because everyone is throwing money away during the election anyway.

I meant 20 million people for all 18 games combined.

One thing to note is that these advertisements are definitely not going to continental Europe players, almost surely not going to British players, and probably aren't even reaching Canadian players. XBL almost surely has regional breakdowns in advertising... It would be insane if they didn't.

You can subtract the underage voters but past that, I bet there's a 50+% penetration rate to applicable players.

Which makes $44k a drop in the bucket and a brilliant ROI. Shit, at my last job, I had control of that much money in two months just to market for an $8-10 million/year business.

Wow, that's pretty cheap advertising then. I'm sure the campaign spent a lot more on the ads that appeared on all the major networks. Besides didn't the Obama campaign get like $150 million in donations in September alone? $44k is a drop in the bucket.

Alright, let me explain myself.

If you think that Colbert was somehow making fun of the democrats by overreaching on the republican talking points, then I think that you are wrong. You may be reading into something that is not there.

Explain to me how that is the case.

Colbert method has not changed either.

As for the Stewart and The Daily Show, it has always leaned fairly heavily to the left (as long as I have watched it anyway, 5-6 years). It also tends to attack those in power more often. That hasn't really changed much either.

Another thing to note here is that Obama is reaching the nearly impenetrable 18-34 male demographic, which dominates this very site. Think about it... How much TV do you watch? How many newspapers do you read? How much non-Internet mass media do you consume, period?

Now compare that to your parents, sisters, grandparents, etc. The 18-34 male demo is the hardest to reach through traditional media. We've abandoned it for the Internet, gaming, movies, and a plethora of other hobbies.

The only real way to reach that demographic is through focused outlets. Gaming is one of them. A few select television stations - Comedy Central is a perfect example - is another. Focused websites are a third.

To get that kind of ROI - focused right at such an elusive group - on $44k is monstrous.

It's simple. Colbert would take a very rational point that makes fun of some Democratic action and starts to make jokes about it. He then continues to go so over the top with the statements that he ends up parodying hardline Republicans by the end of the segment. In the end, he's gotten both parties... Democrats through the initial action, and then Republicans through his Bill O'Reilly schtick.

He stopped doing that about six months ago and the level of humor in the show has dropped off significantly. Don't believe me? Just go back and watch one of his 2005 era shows and then watch something from the past two months. It's pretty blatant how the show has changed.

Stewart has always leaned left and I don't have a problem with that... Like I said, the balance doesn't have to be perfect. But when the show goes from a 60/40 or even 70/30 ratio to a 90/10 ratio, I stopped finding anything he said funny. I don't laugh at political commentators, especially ones who so feebly hide behind the mask of comedy.

And I've been watching the Daily Show since Craig Killborn hosted it.

$44 k is alright , now if it was $45k we'd be bringing the pickets out.

I don't think you read the articles on this.  The ads didn't target everyone on XBL so all of your numbers are way off.
