The 360 made profit? Should I be surprised because it's the first time I've seen it do so or have I been living under a rock for too long?

I think you have been living under a rock.

Not necessarily. They posted their first yearly profit ever for last year from the Entertainment and Devices Division since the Xbox brand launched. Here are the numbers.

Microsoft2002      -750,000,0002003    -1,191,000,0002004    -1,215,000,0002005      -485,000,0002006    -1,262,000,0002007    -1,892,000,0002008       426,000,0002009       178,000,000Totals  -6,191,000,000

2009 represents just this past quarter. All other years represent full earnings (loss).

Counting Xbox losses, they are still some 6 billion dollars of debt. Just the 360, I think it would be some 2 billion.

I estimate they'll get to -5 billion before the R+D on the nextBox starts ramping up and throws the division back to the red.

I guess that depends on when they start producing the next hardware, right? Technically, aren't they already prepping for the next box? We won't hear about that for awhile.

Since MS cut prices and still made money that means Sony needs to too!

I agree, with all the moneyhatting MS does, Sony should be able to throw a little money towards 3rd parties as well.

I wonder how much money sony can throw compare to MS??

MS will alway throw more money towards 3rd than sony. ouch!!

considering all the things they dump into that division, how can we really tell where xbox ends, and things like surfaces or mac office end.... this division needs redefining

Not really. Sony just revised their forecast for operating income in their game division down ¥30b due to the appreciating Yen. With Microsoft being a US company they are unaffected by this, unlike Sony.

The appreciating Yen basically means that to Sony PS3 has already received a price cut in NA & EU this year. They had originally forecast ¥105/$1, but now expect ¥100/$1. US PS3 has dropped in price from ¥42,000 to ¥40,000. With Euro the drop is larger. They originally forecast ¥162/€1, but now expect only ¥140/€1. EU PS3 has dropped from ¥64,800 to ¥56,000.

Expecting them to cut prices under the current circumstances is pretty unrealistic.

Sad, but true news. $400 is still a lot. Oh, economy.

The funny thing is that with the recent drop in value of the Pound, the price of a PS3 in the UK is now below the price of a PS3 in the US.

PS3 UK = £255 + VAT = $393 + Tax
PS3 US = £258 + Tax = $400 + Tax

With higher retail margins and other higher costs of doing business in UK compared to US Sony must be losing quite a bit on PS3 in UK at the moment. Of course when the Pound was high they were probably losing the least on UK PS3, so it kind of evens out.
