Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo will not fix the storage problem

I've recently run out of room on my Wii.

When I swapped out "My Life as King" to the SD card so I could download "Strongbad episode 1", it took so long to move it that I thought it would be faster for me just to redownload it!

I don't know how long it takes to pull the game from the SD card back to the Wii -- I haven't wanted to find out. It means I'd have to put Homestar Ruiner out on the SD card, which is going to take ages. In fact, that's why I haven't purchased Strongbad episode 2, and also why I haven't bought Lost Winds. Both games I really want to get. But instead I save my money for other things.

If their solution is to put it straight onto the SD card, then I'd be OK with it as long as the SD card can download back into the Wii really quick. But somehow I don't suspect that's the case.

32GB SD cards are already available in the market and 64GB is just at the doorstep. Whey people want HDD is beyond me.

Can the Wii recognize SD cards that big?  I thought that we were limited to 1 or 2 GB cards.

Someone is blowing this a little out of proportion.... lol

Just kiss the tip.

You really play that many VC/WW games at once? I believe that places you in a tiny minority. I pretty much play only 2-3 games at a time, usually across different platforms.

We all heard the conference news and we all heard about the so called storage solution. However, I think most people didn't understand the actual announcement correctly:

"Iwata announced that future Wii software can be downloaded directly to the SD memory card. Finally! It will also be possible to easily move software from SD card to the Wii system memory." (IGN.com)

The only new functionality is that Nintendo allows VC and WiiWare games to be downloaded to the SD card, but to actually play them, you still need to move the games over to the Wii's internal memory.

This is probably the most stupid thing Nintendo has done this generation. We can't keep swapping games forever. In a couple of months, when people have too many VC and WiiWare games they want to play regularly, people stop buying new VC and WiiWare games.

In other words, Nintendo killed its own download service.

I assumed the same thing at first but then I started thinking about it and it just didn't make sense.

They could allow you to download directly to your SD card, then more something else to your SD card, and then move your newly downloaded game off your SD card, and then finally play it.

That doesn't make sense and doesn't solve anything.  All it does is add another step.  Because of that, I'm pretty sure they're going to allow you to play games off your SD card.  I just hope games on your SD card will show up on your menu.

Reggie just Said: "Instead of dealing with the current hassles of Wii storage, you'll be able to download Wii software from the shopping channel to your SD card, and the process of transferring that software will become "dramatically easier.""

I wish he would have said:

Well I guess this thread wasn't an overreaction after all eh?

Well, looks like Chirzum wasn't overreacting

Looks to be like you download directly to SD card, but can transfer faster. Still sucky. Not sure how that's a "solution".

Problem:  My Wii's memory is full, I can't download anything new.

Solution:  Download to your SD card instead of your Wii.

Seems pretty clear to me.
