Mario Kart Wii has been out for around six months and has sold about 7 million copies, which is very good. But;

Grand Theft Auto IV sold 10 million copies in less than four months.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the King, sold more than 12 million copies in five months.

So, Mario Kart Wii doesn't hold a candle to Grand Theft Auto.

Noob or troll? Either way, if you're not even going to bother reading the previous posts then you're time here will be limited.

Suddenly, I am noob when I'm telling the truth? What, no it can't be. Just accept the fact.

This is called cherry picking. Do yourself a favor and lookup what that means.

If you look at one fact in isolation, cherry picking that fact, you can prove the earth is flat. Of course there are other facts that you ignored that have been already presented. For example, Mario Kart is still topping the charts while GTAIV has fallen significantly. Another fact, Mario Kart has been beating GTAIV by 6 digit numbers for months. Another fact, Mario Kart DS is still top 20 after 3 years of selling.

There are many games that start out quickly, then die off. There are other games that start slowly and increase sales over time. That's a fact.

When there is no choice people go with what they have available... so Mario Kart and Smash Brothers should sell to infinity and beyond.

Won't GTA4 outsell it tho considering mulitiple platforms?

No choice? Is that your reasoning behind why Nintendo dominates all the top selling lists?

And no, I don't think GTA4 has a shot, here's why:

http://vgchartz.com/swlaunch.php?reg1=All&game1=Mario+Kart+Wii+-+Wii&reg2=All&game2=Grand+Theft+Auto+IV+-+PS3&reg3=All&game3=Grand+Theft+Auto+IV+-+X360&weeks=25&weekly=1

GTA4's legs aren't going to be enough - at 35k per week it would need a 1M holiday boost, and that may be too much. I'm sure Mario Kart will pull ahead soon, if it sells consistently above 100k and receives a moderate holiday boost, it'll fly by no problem.

That downloadable content may give it a boost, but yeah 1 mil is a bit much to expect.

Im not sure if it will beat the first 12 months, but it's pretty much guaranteed it will outsell it LTD.

^Seems you finally read the OP.

The 1 year record holder is currently GTA:SA (at least for single platform games)
However that will be broken by Mario Kart Wii before April.... which is what this thread was about.

Oh and you don't seem to have your facts straight either, GTA:SA did not sell 12 million in 5 months, it took just under 10 months to do that.

No, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas DID sell more than 12 million units in five months, and that's a record Mario Kart Wii won't beat. And even if Mario Kart Wii miraculary hits 12 million in 12 months, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas mighty 12 million sales in 5 months will put it to shame.

That's an interesting way to look at it, but unfortunately, it's stupid.

Other than that, you're wrong.

If you had bothered to read the link in the OP, you would have seen that GTA:SA used 41 weeks to break 12M, hardly 5 months, eh?

Crap, I gtg, I'll post a reply in an hour or so.

Check the link in the OP (as Oyv has said)

Perhaps it shipped 12 million in 5 months, but that would mean you are comparing shipped numbers to the sales figures of Mario Kart and GTAIV.

No, fact is that VGChartz is wrong, and GTA SA did not sell 12 million in one year. That’s dead wrong.

@theprof00: I guarantee you, Mario Kart Wii is not just selling to the old Nintendo audience. The Wii wheel is reeling new people in - when new people pick the Wii, what other games would they buy with the console? Besides the Wii Series, Mario Kart Wii seems like the perfect choice, a game practically anyone can enjoy.

absiolutely c0rd. however, i think maybe i phrased my post incorrectly so i'll reiterate.

the max on the gamecube was 7 million copies.

That means that there are maybe 6-8 million fans depending on how many rebuys and used game purchases there were.
There are only 20 million fans of nintendo from last gen.

This means that, at most, the loyalty factor is only going to affect 20 million, of which maybe only 10 million have bought a wii, it's quite hard to say. i had a cube and i sold my wii so... there ya go, it's really hard to say. To be on the safe side of the argument, we'll say that all 20 million cube owners have a wii. that means that 7 million mario kart games should be sold of which 8 million already are.

out of those gamecube owners 10 million had played mk64, and lost 3 million at the next iteration.

So as far as the overextended demographic, coupled with the lack of fanbase (comparitively), and the sales per week dropping by a good 8-10 percent week over week, the relatively expensive cost of the wheels and remotes, and several other great games on the market for the wii,  I hereby bet that mkwii will not reach the record.

although you make a point saying that the wheel sells to other people than fans, i agree, however your point says, "on top of the fans there is this group", when in reality it is "this group needs to make up for the lack of fans in the first place"

your assertion that mkwii is the perfect choice is just an opinion. IMO more people are looking at wiiFit, mario galaxy, things that make news, or are archetypal, mkwii just isn't archetypal, sure its a racing game and it's a mario game, but new gamers will be playing mario galaxy than a sidegame starring mario.

New gamers aren't picking up SMG instead of MKWii. If someone gets Wii for Wii Fit or Wii Sports, MKWii is the perfect game for them to upstream. The wheel and the fun assosiated in the game are the key elements to get the new audience into the game. The new audience is getting SMG after MKWii. This is the NSMB equivalent on Wii.

Crap, you nearly broke my keaboard! I was drinking water, and I spit it all out over the keaboard (due to laughing).

But to theprof00

"sales per week dropping by a good 8-10 percent week over week,"

Wait, what games are you talking about? That's just ridiculous.

MKWii is the best legged non-bundled console game since 2000 (we don't have data for NES and SNES, and some of the Mario games there are probably better) - it's selling totally steady in Others (had a 6 week stroke of increases over 15 weeks after release). It's been in the top 10 in Japan since April! (Well, 1 or 2 weeks have been off). In Americas it's not doing awesome, but it might end up in the top 10 of the console games this gen when all is said and done.

Well, to put it simple.

Mario Kart Wii is going to be the 2nd best selling console game in Japan for 2008, behind Wii Fit.

Mario Kart Wii is going to be the 2nd (maybe 3rd) best selling console game in Americas for 2008, behind Smash Bros. Brawl

Mario Kart Wii is going to be the best selling (maybe second) best selling console game in Others for 2008, perhaps behind Wii Fit.

Mario Kart Wii had the about 10-20th best launch of 2008.

How can the title not have legs?
