Nintendo gets into the router game, plans to destroy competition by not really trying

Nintendo just announced a 5,800 Yen (about $54 US) WiFi router, built to take that pesky wired Ethernet internet and blast it across your home in a palatable WiFi fashion for use by your Wii or DS. Just like every other router ever. Only this one is cheap, cute and built by Nintendo, so watch out Linksys / Netgear / everybody. The "Nintendo WiFi Network Adapter," meant to supplement 2005's WiFi USB Connector, looks to be Japan-only at the moment, and is due for a September 18th release.

[Thanks, Sanimir]

Is Nintendo planning support for full featured online gaming finally?

BUYING

Ehh... I didn't understand why you made the question in the end. I believe Nintendo has big plans for online in the future and currently Virtual Console and WiiWare makes them money. Since there are a lot of Wiis offline, this is a way to promote the online features, like the Wi-Fi USB connector, which manufacturing was ended/is ending and this is for its replacement.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

My Linksys router works fine, but I know everyone's mileage varies, so this is good I guess.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

Have you tried to play Smash online with strangers? My wii never finds other players, but when I play COD4 online on my PS3 I can play instantly with others

should be interesting... but I already have a router =/

I don't plan on giving up my Tomato-equipped WRT54GL anytime soon, but Nintendo should put this in game stores. They might find a market with 360 owners who need a bridge.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

Be the ultimate ninja! Play Billy Vs. SNAKEMAN today! Poisson Village welcomes new players.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

so nintendo considers this more pressing than say... a hard drive solution?

Just throwing out a crazy idea here, but what if that is also the storage solution?

Think about it, by including maybe 1 to 5GB of storage on there, they could sell it to new Wii owners as the one box you need for Online Wii, from connectivity, playing games to storage space for Wiiware and VC. Plus it would sell to existing owners as the storage solution we all want. Causing us to throw out our old Wifi boxes. Causing...

Nintendomination 2.0!

Well, its a thought.
