I could see it happening but I don't see them taking out wi-fi.

It would most likely happen next year some time though unless it's announced at TGS.

 wi-fi costs a lot

taking it out would be perfect to lower production costs

Wifi cost $15.50 in the original iSuppli teardown analysis in 2006.  It is essential for the PSP/PS3 remote play feature.  I don't think the savings would justify the decrease in functionality.  Sony could only remove the HD if they included a 2x or 4x Blu-ray drive.  Many developers use the PS3 HD as a crutch to resolve loading issues caused by the existing Blu-ray drive.  Also, Sony seems committed to digital distribution so they will be pushing more HD space for users not less.  I think the 160 gig sku is unnecessary.  Sony would be better off with a single sku at $399.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Not sure what else they can do. I'd just stick with this price for this holiday but drop it next year in time with a FF 13 or GT5.

We will see once the cheaper prices for the 360 come in how it will affect the sales of the PS3.

Prediction (June 12th 2017)

Permanent pricedrop for both PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro in October.

PS4 Slim $249 (October 2017)

PS4 Pro $349 (October 2017)

the 40 [going on 80] seems to be the lowest they are going in terms of tech. SONY is aiming for an internet based system, and focusing heavily on downloadable games, video content, music content, etc. Taking out wi-fi wouldn't help this at all. And I don't see them going lower than 2 USB ports. Honestly the controllers charge through USB.... having only 1 isn't too attractive.. even the ps2 had 2.

A 40GB HDD isn't that big these days, and lets not forget there are some games already programmed for magnatory installs, leaving the option of "no HDD at all" impossible. I don't see SONY going back to a 20GB HDD with the amount of downloadable content and the installs that are around in games today.

And as for the BD drive.... who here really thinks SONY would make a model without it??? HONESTLY???

As far as I see it.... all SONY can do is lower the price, the 40GB looks like the minimal in terms of what SONY is trying to make of with the ps3.

4 ≈ One

no need

maybe in Xmas09 ... I m not even sure.

And as for the BD drive.... who here really thinks SONY would make a model without it??? HONESTLY??? no one, but the BR is getting cheaper and that could help

i brought this up becuase sales of ps3 here are so so so low , people here care about gaming but they lose intrest when the ps3 = 670$ for the 40 gig -including me- :)

Actually... whoever mentioned taking the BD-drive out has an idea there... not advertising the console as a PS3, but as something else... like the PSN console, or something. A console that is essentially a PS3 with everything taken out except what's needed at bear minimum to run PSN titles, and downloaded movies.

It would have to be branded as something completly different from the PS3, though. But both would have to exist.

yeah. That is pretty expensive. That sucks.

No price is too expensive for a PS3. I say get a job and save up the money to buy the best video game console on the planet.

If they remove the Wi-Fi they're likely removing the Bluetooth capability which means that the Dualshock 3 controllers would need to be plugged directly into the system as well as most other accessories not working with the system.  Bad Idea & would mean you'd actually need MORE USB slots than systems are currently shipping with (2).

10 or 20GB Hard drives (as you suggested) are actually cost prohibitive.  At least in the 2.5" form factor.  Those sizes of hard drives aren't seeing the same size manufacturing runs as say 80GB or 160GB and as such will run a much higher $/GB ratio.  This is part of the reason they got rid of the 40GB when they did.

You can't remove any more USB slots because people still need to be able to charge their controllers & accessories.

The PS3 has shipped with a 2x Blu-Ray drive since launch.  A 4x Blu-Ray PS3 would be AMAZING though.  I'd sell mine and get one of those in an instant.
