Forums - Nintendo - What Wii core gamers must understand, Wii/consoles IS A TOY its for KIDS...

Its pretty obvious isnt it. I had the same thought, whats the point of making games for adults when its kids who will be the biggest market in the future.

I liked it, theyre toys, glad im not into action figures anymore coz i would be even less of a man.

Lord of the Night, but his point is relevent in terms of not really needing the video game market in their business strategy. Why do they care? They don't have to

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

I didn't know about this guy, he's freakn hilarious! I just checked out 6 and at 2 am I feel very awake, so far everthing he's said I can totally agre with, all his concepts are logical, he even went beyond my reasoning as to girl gamers, I hadnt given that issue much though.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

The Hunt Begins 4/20/2010 =D

In the end he did bring up some good points. Keeping a steady stream of new customers (kids) coming in definitely can't be a bad thing. Nintendo seems like they have the right idea going for the younger audience, especially since it seems that that most people stay fans of the games they played as kids.

CIHYFS?

You know by this theory Nintendo like McDonalds, like Disney will continue long in to the future generating long term fan interest by appealing to kids.

What was that he said about third parties??

Of course they don't have to, but they do care, and if they turn around their video game divisions for mass appeal, then they have plenty of reasons to stay.

That is why the are working so hard on additions to their systems that have mass appeal, and that they are working on pushing games that have mass appeal, like Singstar, and Viva Pinata. The latter game seemed to be a flop, but like a lot of Wii and DS games, it had legs, showing such sales can be done on even the 360.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Stop watching after he called the multimedia hubs (PS360) "toys"

I didn't know that a movie player was a "toy"
I didn't know that a storage unit for pictures and videos was a "toy"
I didn't know that a continuing thrust towards an online community was a "toy"

You can have fun, enjoy, and be entertained by things without out them being "toys"

I enjoy paintballing. Is my paintball gun a "toy"? I like building things. Are my tools "toys"? I like playing online with friends. In what aspect does that make my system a "toy".

I understood what he was trying to say, but he was being too oversimplistic by generalizing anything that is enjoyable as a "toy". But then again, I guess simplicity is what Nintendo is going after nowadays. He swears that M$ and Sony's game divisions are going to die off because they focus on HD....well guess what. IT'S BECOMING THE STANDARD!!!! Why would M$ and Sony want to effectively work BACKWARDS? Everyone is slowly but surely buying HDTV's, 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound systems, HD receivers, etc.....

It's actually SMARTER to work on COMPLIMENTING what people are already doing. It's like economics. Say peanut butter sales were starting to go up. That would consequentally make jelly sales go up too. (PB is HD, and Sony/M$ are the jelly)

The Nintendo approach to this would be that if peanut butter sales were going up, they would push something completely opposite, like I dunno....vinegar.

Sorry if that seems like a generalization or is too simplistic, but hey, that's what Nintendo is doing, right?

Edit: I don't know about anyone else, but I enjoy the fact that Sony has grown with me. I can't say M$ because they're new......but for Sony, the PS brand has grown up with me. THe started with the likes of Spyro and Crash Bandicoot when I was a kid. Getting older, they got things like DMC and the Jak series. Now this generation I'm seeing the likes of Uncharted and MGS4. He mentions "diehards", but the fact is, M$ and Sony are actually keeping their audiences, whereas Nintendo continually brings in new ones by sticking with Mario, and thus abandons the older ones because they get tired of rehashes every generation.

My two cents.....

wow, never though of that... interesting how they used the comic book industry as an example...

great watch, but in the reality of things (in a style following the video)
LISTEN TO THIS
LISTEN TO THIS
LISTEN TO THIS
LISTEN TO THIS
THE WII ISN"T KID-FRIENDLY BECAUSE IT HAS CHILD-SAFE CONTENT, IT IS KIDDIE BECAUSE IT IS HARD TO FIND ENOUGH ROOM FOR A "CHALLENGING" 5 HOUR GAME WITHOUT REVISITING, NARRATING, OR RE-HIGHSCORING. CHRIST, I GET THE SAME KIND OF WALKTHROUGHS FROM MY GRANDMOTHER WHEN I'M DOING THE DISHES.
:P it's true.
the other systems are made for people who like to play games, and the wii is made for people who might like games but essentially it is just to have fun and waste some time for 15 minutes while waiting to go to the club/movies/bingo room.

EDIT: "CHALLENGING"

Business wise anyone with good sense would see that coming a mile away, the foundations of a good business is, good products, good service, catering to your customers, and MAKING new customers. If you don't follow all those essentials your company will die, I guess this is why Nintendo made 1 billion in PROFIT and the other companies are struggling to turn one.

If Nintendo had made just another horsepower based console and tailored to only core gamers this gen might have made the game industry kill itself for the second time, the games industry had already became a little stagnant by the end of the last gen, almost all games looked and felt the game, it really wasn't as fun as it used to be and then 360 and PS3 wanted to deliver the same games with more polygons, more grit, and more "realism", the game industry would have killed itself cause there's only so long people will be satisfied with the same product over and over and they quit, IE over 50% of the console owners out there, they are not the fans of video games as the core followers, and most have lives they tend to over games, if you only tailor to that crowd you'll eat yourself alive.

I know I just repeated a lot of what was in the video but I've known that for ages and honestly I love that Nintendo can come out with a product to make games interesting again in a time when the industry needed it even if they didn't see it coming. I love the products all the companies make but you've got to realize there's more people in the world that can buy your product and you should mix things up to make them want to buy your console.

@Soriku: Not quite... In the marketing sense mascot is what you to create mindsets. The most stupid thing Sony did with Crash, was to sell it, since it would have been a great maskot.

Now, with the sackboy, whether LBP will be popular or not, Sony can make more games with sackboy in in it and create a popular mascot from it.
Mascot should appeal people of all ages, since that way you can tap the customers early so, that they are familiar with the product still at older age.
