Forums - Microsoft - My impressions of Halo 3 (SP only)

I *quiet* enjoyed Halo 1 when I got into it (On the PC, it was utter shite on the Xbox because of bad frame rate), Didn't like Halo 2 one bit...dull as it gets!

Halo 3 = pants = completely agree with the OP...

I have finished the 1st 2 games so I can comment (in regards to poster saying you need to have played the 1st 2).

There isn't really words to sum up how crap Halo 3 is...I come from a PC FPS background, the gameplay is so 1997 its not even funny.

It had decent campaign until cortana level, ugh. Multiplayer is still excellent though.

Well I have rented Halo 3, and having never played a halo game before, I was expecting it to be good especially after such ridiculously good reviews, and I am very disapointed

To start, the game begins assuming that you have played the first two Halo games before it, so there is absolutely no explanation of what is going on, who is who, and any of the controls. This obviously puts me at a disadvantage because then the story does not make sense, and I do not have any idea who any of the enemies are. I like the setting etc, but I cannot really enjoy it because NO explanation is given for anything, which really does annoy me

In terms of gameplay, it is certainly nothing special, but with most enemies being weird crawling things, there is not much opportunity for headshots or anything, which does annoy me, especially after playing Gears and Uncharted where you basically have to get headshots constantly. Also, the lack of a look down the sights button really annoys me. Also with the vehicle sections, I just dont understand why games like this hate accelerator buttons. They make it so much easier to control, and the sections are good, but they could be a lot better. But once again, I have no idea what vehicles do what and which one is which, and again some introduction would help.

Basically, I found the game to be really average, though I will play it through to the end. I do appriechiate that playing co-op will make it more fun, but I dont have gold so that is not an option. Just a bit of explanation, introductions of weapons etc would help, but the gameplay is fundementally average. I also dont like the way that they just assume that you have played the first 2. I can understand MGS 4 not giving you a summary of what has previously happened, but just a little bit on info on what happened before would have helped. I have used wiki to find out some plot details of the previous ones, and that has helped, but it just assumes you know who people are, and I have no idea who they are.

Oh yeah, and what the hell are the flood, and why would they include them, I hate it when games do stuff like that and try and make a level of something like survival horror (Uncharted!!!! why would you do it) and that level was just rubbish. It does mix it up, but the vehicle sections do a good enough job of that

I basically stopped reading from here. No offense, but you can't really rate the third game of a series if you've never played the other ones to begin with. You can't even notice the differences between the games, which is, in my opinion, the best thing to do (and the best satisfaction you can get).

Also, why are you comparing Halo 3 to Gears and Uncharted? That's ridiculous! Just rate the game for what it is: A Halo game. It's like people comparing Battlefield: Bad Company and Call of Duty 4 (which is NOT the god of FPS games, please people)... o_o

you don't need to have played the first games of mgs. I didn't and mgs4 is one of the best games i've played this year.

@ shmupgurus, the developers should not expect you to have played the first games to have any sort of clue what is going on if it is not a hugely story driven game, and any sort of introduction would have helped, even a tutorial of some kind. I dont have a manual, so i just had to guess the controls

I was comparing it to Uncharted and Gears because those are the last shooters that I have played and they are still on my mind

Despite perception, the only Halo that has been really excellent as a single player game was Halo 1. Halo 1 popularized the "Hide behind things until your shield regenerates" evolution that all FPS' use today, including Call of Duty 4. That said, it actually is a largely story driven game. "Finish the fight" doesn't refer to the gameplay, and Master Chief isn't popular because of how he looks.

You have the story mode, and the online aspect. The actual story mode(campaign) isn't that great. I was dissapointed. Never played it online, but I did play Halo 2 extensively online, and I can tell you that it is fantastic. It was passable, however, I'd rate it an 8/10, being generous, simply on single player, but that is a relatively small part of the actual game. Halo 2 moved the series towards an online focused shooter, and away from its single player roots.

The campaign ending was a bit cliched, but I still enjoyed it, having followed the story from the beginning.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

you can get headshots fairly easily on both the covenant and the flood. and i can only recall 1 enemy "crawling"

and why is it ok for mgs4 not to give back story but halo is evil for not doing it?

I am more talking about the annoying little things that call me bullies (I think, I have no idea what they are or who they are talking to)

It is okay for MGS because it has the most complicated plot ever, that you will probably not understand even if you are paying attention

I would have appriechiated any sort of introduction, at least MGS 4 tells you the name of the character when they are shown, instead of just assuming that you know them. Want I really wanted was a tutorial to explain all the systems, like the dual weilding, what each weapon, grenade, vehicle can do.

@ montana, I am only playing because I have to play about 100 matches to get my last 100 points, only 12 left!

I have halo, halo2 and halo 3, I never bothered to finish the campaign on any, where these games shine is in multiplayer especially halo 2

There is a thing called custom games.  Just start one up and get use to everything by yourself.  I know it sounds lame to play in a custom game by youself but atleast you can get the controls down and what everything does.

Hi, this is Vince with Shamwow.

I agree on that Cortana level. It's horrible !
The rest of the campaign is decent for one player, but with 1, 2 or 3 mates it rocks.
The controls for the vehicles are a bit difficult to master for an unexperienced Halo gamer, but I can't imagine a Halo game without them. I think they are very fun especially driving the Warthog.

I dont really have an major issue using them, but I would just prefer having an accelorator button (and some competant team mates to shoot)

@ph4nt... really you didnt like the first ones story i thought it was brilliant first fps i ever cared about the story...
the second one was so so... felt like it needed more development time (the first one developed for about 4 years). the 3rd one felt too restricted in wepons and what you could do ... not enough ability to back track for stuff... though i did aprciate some of it... really wanted to be in a massive battle like the add campaign....

honestly if you want to understand halo go back and play the original, you can see all the stuff that was refined in the latter 2 there... great game, and will always be best in series
