Forums - Nintendo - Play Magazine: Nintendo has officially gone off the reservation

nintendo is smart, they think that 3rd parties would make the FPS's for them. the FPS genre is pretty well established by now, most developers have a good idea of how to make good ones. with wii's point and click, and metroid seemingly being great, they'll have a model to copy and they will be good. it's a void they'll be eager to fill.

it's the same reasoning as nintendo not making M rated titles themselves. nintendo courts 3rd parties to make them--No More Heroes, Manhant II, etc--to fill the void.

but the casual markets--3rd party are slow to recognize its potential, and few if any really knows how to make those games, and nintendo is solidifying its market leader position.

it's just extending your competitive advantage. brilliant tactics. higher margin business. of course, it sucks quite a bit for the "real" gamers--nintendo games are quality, and they'll be missing that.

Yeah cause you know 'real' gamers are gonna skip good 'real' games on Wii if they come out right?

Do you really believe an editor of a magazine that refers to himself as casual gamer has more knowledge than a dedicated gamer that's highly interested in Nintendo's business plans?

Yes.  How many of those dedicated gamers have actually got to listen to Reggie Fils-Aime in person, attend exclusive gamer's days, or write about Nintendo and videogames for a living?

Once again as I say NIntendo has 70% of their development team creating for the core gamer or 20% of the market. While they have 30% of their development team creating for the casual gamer which is 80% of the market. The core gamer can't see this as them getting ripped off at all.

personally I think he's probably made cuase he wanted to see so much more. Well keep your temper down and be patient like all of us. We all have to wait for E3 and you shouldn't feel like your above anyone else. You got to see MP3 in action so be happy about that.

bottom line: nintendo is leveraging 3rd parties to make "real" games on their platform.  justifications already detailed in previous.

the Wii is an epidemic.

That fucking bastard is using my words! I told weeks and even days ago on this forum. I am happy those fanboys can read that even people who are into the gaming world think like me :).

No, what Reggie explained is that it's your mom they want; that games like Nintendogs would pave the way for generations of Wii gamers to come. Nintendo's focus will now shift from the core gamer to the casual to very casual gamer.

Uh... lemme see. Editor in Chief versus consumer. Who knows more about the industr... hmmm...

No offense but I'll go with the editor in chief on this one.

Also I like how you slipped in the diss on casual gamers there, so now casual gamers don't know about games as much as non-casuals?

I've noticed time and time again when reading videogame magazines or reading websites that some of the editors have less knowledge about Nintendo, respectively their games, than I have. Just because they are paid for doing this job doesn't automatically make them more of an expert than me.

Bro the most of the writers in videogame magazines have grown up with Nintendo. They have knowledge about it and they see that Nintendo has changed from core gamers and casual gamers to => Very Casual gamers and little core gamers.

This isn't unexpected. But there are a few things to take into account. Nintendo will always have Mario, Metroid, and Link, which cater to their "core" crowd. But it seems they will be focusing on continually expanding the market. Third parties will have the "core" audience to satisfy. The question is ... will they?

You cannot assume that the whole rest of the population is going to adopt this casual gaming, also how much will they adopt it? Will they buy a constant stream of games or a few games to play around with as a distraction. I think the latter.

Legend, my understanding is that Play has been far from universally pro-Nintendo for a long time. Unless I'm mistaken, I've seen a host of anti-Wii editorials on their pages. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

bottom line is, it's a business decision, and as a nintendo shareholder, i like this direction. short-term for sure.

yes, sucks for the "hardcore" gamer, but personally i couldn't care less.
