Forums - Sony - Does Sony not care about third parties? (FF XIII related)

From IGN:

The first question on the floor was one to clarify how, if at all, the Xbox 360 release would affect the PS3 version. The short answer is that it won't. Final Fantasy XIII is being developed first for the PS3 in Japan, a region that won't see an Xbox 360 release. The Xbox 360 iteration is a port of the PS3 build, but Square was quick to point out that you can't say this will cause a delay of the PS3 release in America. Separate teams are working on the two versions and both are moving along on schedule. There shouldn't be a delay in any releases.

and.

There also are no plans to have the games be different on Xbox 360 and PS3. Nothing has been decided for sure yet, but the team is looking at ways to compress the audio and pre-rendered cutscenes that take up a lot of data without affecting the quality when bringing the game from a blu-ray format to the DVDs that Xbox 360 reads.

Oh noes, slight detail lost because of compressed video and audio ... I bet every XBox 360 owner will throw their XBox 360 in the trash and spend $400 on a PS3 for that!

Seriously, I would hardly say such small differences are justification for calling one version inferior ... They might matter for the handful of people who own both systems, but it is nothing to really care about.

@crazzy:  You forgot to bolden the part that says "without affecting the quality when bringing the game from a blu-ray format to the DVDs".  Also, seeing as you believe it's being developed on the PS3, here's a 1up article from the Square-Enix Press conference.  I don't know where IGN got their information, but I think they confused the part where they stated:

"Currently the game is being built on PC, where it's actually functional. We're still focusing on making it work on PS3 so it's difficult to know how long the process of taking it to 360 will take."

and:

"Now that we're developing on a PC base, the pace is going a bit faster,"

The game is being developed with Crystal Tools on the PC.  It is then being ported and made to work on the PS3 first for a release in Japan.  Then, they will be translating the game and make it work for the Xbox for the west.  So, they're both ports =)))))))))

x360 is getting inferior PORT of FFXIII.
What is the problem here? =)

The only thing I can think that's "inferior" is that the 360 version demands more discs.

I will probably take the PS3 version but you never know, it might work better on the 360 and in that case I'll get that version( even if I LIke playing with less discs).

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Meh...if they wanted to buy them then why didn't they during PS2 times? =/ I doubt they'll buy them but they'll still make games for Sony.

Why would they buy them if it wasn't necessary?

There was no reason to buy it during PS2 times, everyone wanted to develop for it exclusively anyway.  It's called a business decision.

What happened to all the devs making the RPGs for Sony in the PS1/PS2 eras? There are only like 2 RPGs on the PS3.

They are going to keep losing 3rd party exclusives with Microsoft's paycheck.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

@noslodecoy, you think they DON`T want to make sales on x360???
of`course they won`t admit that quality will be inferior,
BUT admiting, that they will have to compress the game already means inferior.

The Xbox 360 iteration is a port of the PS3 build
So, x360 is a port of port. The game became just MORE inferior.))

@Naum, have fun with dvd speed.

20-30 sec for texture loadings in HIGH profile games.)
x360 just won`t be able to hold FFXIII at PS3 quality.

My point is that Sony can't live off first party and some second party games forever. MS is buying exclusives and multiplats. If the game does really well on the 360 then third parties might not put that certain game on the PS3. Userbase is crucial and without the proper third party support it could hurt them. MS can always buy exclusivity or companies can just make games Wii exclusive (MS hasn't gone after Wii exclusives. They seem to only want to hurt Sony.). I mean...yeah, the PS3 won't sell 100 mil+ but couple that with the fact that they don't make much money on the PS3 and third parties are leaving Sony (making 360 games exclusive or multiplat) and Wii games as exclusive.

Well Nintendo did that  for the Gamecube and N64 era, and they did well for themselves as far as quality titles and profitability. I really think Sony has said again and again that they want to make money, and then start buying out titles. I think it might not be late to beat the 360 then (next year).

Well...like I said (and others have as well) Sony is no Nintendo in terms of profitability and first/second party game popularity (the PS1/PS2 were regarded so highly mostly because of third parties). And then we have MS attacking them as well and I don't think Sony will be out of it easily like Nintendo with the N64/GC. They can still expand their first/second party game userbase though.

You should remember that Nintendo has had a bigger monopoly on the hand held arena than Microsoft has on OS, that is until the psp stole about a third of it.  Also, Nintendo has had 20 years to build up their first party franchises.  Sony's biggest franchise is also one of their oldest, Gran Turismo.

And for the people saying that SE will make FF13 inferior on the 360, believe it or not companies have pride, and SE will not let FF13 go out the door if the 360 version is noticeably inferior in any way.

Quick question though about the Crystal Tools which might be intriguing to some people, my self included.  If the Crystal Tools is to allow them to make PC games and then port it to consoles and have it be a high quality port (so that you don't even know it is a port), does anyone else hope that they will start releasing games on the PC?  I know Infinite Undiscovery is coming to PC, but I think that is using Epic's Unreal Engine.  Personally I plan on getting it for PC so that I can help show there is interest in SE making PC games because what they have been able to do on the ps2 with its limited hardware, just imagine what they can do with PC where there is pretty much no limits to what you can do.

==> ur full (interesting, nothing against you soriku) reasonnement is based on 1 thing :

PS3 doesn't sell.

But, thx VCG, we know it is a strong third player that will soon (1 year ?) be second since it is outselling Xbox360 since about 7 month ...

What is the conclusion  :

If PS3 was able to get multiplateform games WHEN IT WAS WEAK, I dont see why it would not be able to get multiplateform games when it will be STRONG again.

Time to Work !

Also, another point VERY important about firsty party games :

THEY NEVER GO MULTIPLATEFORM !!

meaning u have a longterm control on the franchise that allow you to "stick" the fans to your news console !

OK, you're right, but I don't see them buying them. I'll believe it when I see it. Besides, shouldn't they just focus on funding internal developnent anyway?

*sigh*

That would be internal development.  If they bought Level 5, every game they pumped out would be internally developed.  Internal development comes from buying studios.  That's how Guerilla, Zipper, Evolution, etc are now "internally developed" studios.

And they'll only buy someone if they have the money for it, (i.e.: when they make profit).

I meant why not use the money they could use to buy Level 5 to fund new games? Just because they have the money doesn't mean they have to buy them (in Level 5's case, the majority of them are on Sony systems.). That's like saying "Why can't MS buy SE?"

Well, Sony needs RPGs, and Level 5 has been busy making Professor Layton, and Dragon Quest IX, and the less time they're developing Ninty games, the more time they can spend on Sony Games.
