Sony does care about third party developers. They merely lack the resources to court them. Their only recourse is to turn inward to develop exclusive content for their system. They simply lack the capitol due to their platform strategy. The Sony model was strong on sprint, poor on stamina, and heavy in the realms of gut wrenching desperation.
Sony had a very poor launch strategy that literally devoured much of their gaming divisions expendable income. Their console was estimated to loss lead by two hundred dollars, but in less then a year they had to radically redesign their machine, and double their loss lead. While they were cornered into providing free services for consumers on a continuous basis. Were that not bad enough Microsoft is likely to keep pushing the price front.
Microsoft despite the hardware dilemma has ensured that they have ample revenue streams which allows them to fund third party development. The Live service is a proven money maker. Their game sales are licensing gold. Finally their longer stretch on the market has allowed them to defer cutting the price on their machine. The result they ate no comparable loss to what Sony ate. They are flush with money, and if Live is any indication Microsoft is going to have ample funds to continually purchase exclusivity.
I think the statements by Sony are rather mature. They cannot do anything about the situation where they now find themselves. So there is no point in crying about something you have no control over. They could liquidate some of their studios for a quick influx of revenue, but first party titles are the most likely way they are going to generate enough profit to begin to offset their losses.
Whether Sony cares or not is irrelevant. They seem to have expected that they would have it whereas Microsoft seemed to prioritize getting more of that this generation. They set aside revenue to purchase exclusives. Their architecture supported PC game porting. Their pay to play services have done well to keep them flush with cash. The result isn't what some are expecting, and will probably only get worse over time.
The reality is that Microsoft is simply going to get many more exclusives then Sony. Perhaps next year Sony might find some room to purchase a few titles, but they will be nowhere near Microsoft.
