Why would they buy Level 5? Level 5 already make a majority of their games on Sony systems. Level 5 are third party and like Sony said, they won't buy third party exclusives so why would they buy "A" third party? You make a good point though: Third parties won't overshadow Sony's games now that Sony is focusing on internal development but this isn't really good for people who buy Sony systems for mostly/mainly third party games (mostly RPGs).

@Onyx

They'll likely show a Team Ico game. Others too but that's all we can guess for now lol.

Because almost every studio they own was once third party. ;)

I mean, that's what they do.  They improve their own first party by buying third party studios and then turning into gigantic first party power houses.  Compare the Guerrilla Games of today to what it was four years ago.  The difference is immense.

Why would they buy Level 5 specifically?  Because it is a studio that they have a close relationship with.  It's the same reason they bought Zipper, Guerrilla, and Evolution Studios, despit the fact that all had been 2nd party for years before they were bought, and were extremely unlikely to make games for non-Sony platforms.

Also, if they owned Level 5 then they'd ONLY work on the PSP and ps3, rather then spending so much time on the DS.

However, they probably won't buy ANYTHING unti mid-2009 at the earliest, because the funds just aren't there.  But when they do start to become profitable again, they'll definitely be looking into some RPG studios.
