If Nintendo flop the next 2 generations it could effectivley kill them wheras Sony & MS's shareholders wouldn't be happy about it but they could live with it. Short term Nintendo is pretty well off however in the long term their future is uncertain .

1. A lot of people thought that Nintendo did flop with their consoles the last two generations.

2. It didn't effectively kill them.

3. Your analysis seems short-sighted.

What alot of people believe and what effectivley happened are too entirley different things , Nintendo didn't flop with the GC and they didn't flop with the N64 they just performed to a lesser standard than their competitors , your forgetting about the highly succesfull GC & GBA which had pretty much 80-95% marketshare for their entire life spans.

To be honest  I don't care what you think of the quality of my analysis , I think it was pretty accurate. Wether you like it or not Sony and Microsoft have more capacity to survive periods of loss in their respective gaming divisions Sony has HD TV's , MP3 Players , Entertainment (movies, music etc) , Laptops and the list goes on . Microsoft is also very diversified in it's markets ( I don't think they are as much as Sony but the markets they participate in are far more lucrative).

Nintendo however only have the games market to relly on , if Nintnedo didn't profit for two generations ( or as I said flopped) then how would it not severley damage or even kill them off completley  ? I'd appreciate a superior analysis from you to demonstrate your point.

You are correct. But the thing is, Nintendo has yet to have a year where they didn't profit. And if the PlayStation division would be unable to make any profit the next 2 generations, you can bet your ass that Sony decides to leave the gaming industry.

The thing is, is that during the time of the two generation flops, they had almost the ENTIRE handheld market. No company dared enter it then. Now however SONY has a nice stake, thats growing, in the handheld market. This helps SONY in two ways, first it gives them a fall back if their consoles fail, and if Nintendo's next Gen consoles fail, their handheld market will not be anywhere near the size of what it used to be. Nintendo is shrinking, and if they don't win this Gen, then they will SLOWLY fade away. None of the three companies will just give up.

However, Microsoft has already said they will not continue the Xbox, so unless they make something new they've basically said they give up.

I don't think you have to worry there.

Nintendo knows how to make money, they have several times been awarded the best company in Japan, because of their ability to profit in virtually all conditions. They have as far as i am aware, never had an unprofitable year. If Nintendo can survive the 'flop' that was the gamecube i really can't see anything else taking them down.

If you want to argue that Nintendo might have or may end up as a bit player at some time, then i could agree with that, but if they really had another travesty, they would simply minimise the damage, profit as much as they could and live to fight another day. Their very nature as an innovator means they will always have the chance to fight back. Anyone who thinks Nintendo was or is going to at any point, just going to fade away, has paid no attention to how theyhave run their business. So if having a different business model from Sony and Microsoft means they aren't in direct competition, then i agree.

Nintendo is shrinking? Your analysis is worse than Million's.

...

Wii and PS3 / 360 are NOT in direct competion. Unlike previous generations The Wii and the HD consoles are very different. The controls are different, the style of games is different, the features are different etc. Sure they are in indirect competion where a person must choose between a Wii game and HD console game but other than that the consoles are aiming for different market with an overlap on hardcore fans...

PSP and DS are in direct competition .... both handhelds aim for both casuals and hardcore gamers to sell hardware...

Ohh and for everyone calling SONY and M$ 'sore losers', Before the Wii launched Reggie was adamant the Wii was not in competion with PS3. Nintendo constanly claimed they were aiming for the 'blue ocean' - for people whom have never played games before ... so i think when Nintendo and SONY and Microsoft all agree their not in DIRECT competion there not.

the only reason wii is pwning this gen is because, basically the Wii is a cheap Ps2, but of course the ps2 is better then wii and always will be, i bet if sony dropps the ps3 price down to $299 by this christmas, things will be different and sony will be back in #1 place just like it should be.

I really hope the guy above me isn't serious.

But on another note... I suppose it's less depressing to say that you're not competing with Nintendo, given the ridiculous amount of money they made this last financial year.

Why do people still think the Wii is only selling because it is cheaper that the competition?  The 360 arcade is about the same price in the US and is cheaper in Europe, and it is not selling better.

If the PS3 dropped to $250 today, the same price as the Wii, it would still get outsold by the Wii for the rest of the year.
