Forums - Sony - Why do people think gta6 is going to sell a billion copies?

I constantly see people saying things like its going to be the biggest thing ever, its going to sell like 30 million in a week, its going to be the highest selling game of all time, etc. My first thought is why, but beneath that is just a skepticism that its going to do the sort of numbers that everyone is saying. I know its been 13 years since the last one and its very anticipated, i get that part, but i am just not seeing what it is about this release that is kicking it to this next level that no other game has seen before. And in fact, the closer we get to release, ive seen more negativity and apathy than i ever have before. Even barring that aspect, i am just not seeing it. In my mind, its not a given that its going to do those kind of numbers. If it does, then good for gta, but if it falls well short of expectations, i really wouldnt be surprised.

IMO the game will sell 25-35 million by the end of the calendar year, and then as discounts come and years of copies sold accumulate, it’ll hit 200M LTD. I don’t see it ever topping GTAV especially not with hardware sales likely shrinking over the next gen.

Extremely popular franchise whose previous entry sold a shit ton. I think these are just normal expectations taking that into account. Be weird if it didnt sell above 25m before the year ends.

Beating lifetime sales of gta5 would require it to get released across many console generations, and the future of gaming and how console life cycles will look from here on out is uncertain. So achieving that seems like a very, very slim possibility.

Idk about a billion copies, but can only base off of historical releases for the studio. GTA 5 made $1 billion after 3 days and in 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2 made three quarters of a billion in the same time frame. GTA has only continued to pour in money due to GTA Online. So even more people are familiar with the franchise than there were when GTA 5 released.

Then there's the inevitable PC release. No doubt Rockstar will milk GTA 6 for as much as they humanly can.

One thing's for sure, it's going to be the biggest entertainment launch in history. Not just gaming.

I think 25M+ copies sold in its first week is very possible.

All the signs point to GTA VI blasting previous GTA records out the water. It may get a PC port quicker than GTA V, and it will for sure get another release with PS6/Helix.

Counting on PC, PS6/XBHelix, Switch 2, Iphone 20, PS7/XBNexus, Dreamcast 2, Steambox 2 and Switch 3 versions. Cant see why not

We reap what we sow

I can't speak for others but it will sell as many copies with me as GTAIV and V did. Nihil.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

If hardware prices come dow cause it'll be cross generational, R* will pull the same tactic and people will double dip cross gen and PC. Not to say it's gonna be anywhere near GTA5 cause there were so many Xbox refugees. If online holds up and the game isn't less than half a dud, as well as it did with GTA5 it'll definitely get a good chunk of the way there. It's already moving hardware as seen with PS5 sales. I think online will be where the game excels and half the sales will come from a seperate Online edition and make billions on online shark cards alone and probably more rapidly than GTA5.

Just wanna add. I bought GTA5 on the 360, PS3 for online and then PS4 for the upgrade. I think many people done the same as me and many as well bought on PC for mods as well as upgrading on the 9th gen. But mostly people and their shark cards, that's where the money will come in from and bundles with shark cards bumping sales.
