I have a big, sweet tooth and it is still an issue at times. I am overweight (not obese but about 2 points away from that on BMI) and sweets don't help my health obviously. Thankfully as of labs last year I am not prediabetic and in terms of dental work I don't get cavities often.
It's willpower I suppose, and buying less sweets. Avoid buying entire pies or packs of donuts if you can. There are smaller quantities that are more money per oz, but your health will thank you.

It’s not so much that the sugar is better, but that it is wrapped up in fibers so it doesn’t go immediately into the bloodstream.

Two strategies I just discovered: small bites and savouring each bite. No need to race to the finish with massive chomps. Just take it slow. And as you're chewing, really think about the food you are eating, all the flavors and texture. Also use the additional time while chewing to thoughtfully approach each subsequent bite. That's a new approach I've started taking to eating again recently, and it's worked really well in helping with portion control.

I eat very few sweets at all, cos I know if I do, I'll eat too much.
Due to my severe anxiety, I need to be an strong meds, and these promote weight gain, so it's a constant battle to keep my weight under control.
The most I usually allow myself is muesli and like 95% cocoa dark chocolate.
