If you had to choose between only playing games you have already played and only playing games you have never played, what would you choose?

I'd rather play only game... 18 56.25%

I'd rather play only game... 14 43.75%

Total:32

I mostly replay games anyway. Even when I do play a new game often I think that it would be more fun playing another game I know I like.
New games that I like are rare. But it does happen. But if they are not engaging from the start I will lose intreat before I can know what was so great about it.

New games of course, it's insanity to keep repeating something indefinitely, no matter how good it is/was.
Also, your favorite games were once new games as well, and you would not have found them, had you not tried something new.

Easily new games. Not being able to experience incredibly immersive games decades in the future would be horrible and for old games there's tons of old games I've never played and I want to be able to keep experiencing the history of this medium. In general only being able to experience media you've already experienced before would be such a massive loss of culture.

Yeah, I took this thread to mean that "new" games meant 2027 and beyond, not including older games that I just haven't played yet that would be still be new to me. That makes me think about it a bit more but I'd still choose games I've already played pretty easily.

But especially if we're talking new games coming in the future, I'd choose what's already available without hesitation. Except for Nintendo's games and Resident Evil there's not much on the horizon I'm really looking forward to, certainly not when compared to the massive amount of experiences I've enjoyed for the last 4+ decades. There will never be another Bioshock like the original, companies like Konami, Rare and Sega are shells of their former selves, I don't like Naughty Dog's new games (although the new Uncharted rumor gives me a modicum of hope) and God of War has changed for the worse; these are just a few examples of what I mean.

Basically, I look at it as, if all of the past games that I know and love that made me - and kept me - a gamer were suddenly gone and all I could do was experience what's new going forward, that would suck for me.

Regarding other media like movies or, specifically, TV shows, I'm even more steadfast with that choice. In my opinion, I'm convinced we'll never get another show equal to LOST or Breaking Bad in my lifetime and I look at shows that come out for both streaming and network and there just isn't much that's very entertaining to me. Some ok things here and there, but certainly nothing I'd give up rewatching past favorites like Better Call Saul or Burn Notice for.

I actually meant new games for you in my second option. For example, I have never played Majora's Mask, so, if I chose the first option, I could never play MM, because it would be a new game/experience for me. Should I make it clearer in the pool, so that people don't get confused?

Nah, your thread's fine.  I think it was just my interpretation that was off.

I'd still choose games I've already played pretty easily though, simply because I've already tried most of what I've ever cared to play and there's still a lot that I want to go back and finish.

I have a backlog of over 100 already extant games that I intend to play but haven't got around to yet, so that alone could last me years and years on top of whatever gets made in the future.

If I haven't played it, it's new to me!

This is true. However it is a lot of diminishing return with more games that one have played to compare with. The first few years every second game or so was a good time and better than a lot of the previously played game. Now it is like one in 50 new games. My gaming time is not enough for that tryout and when i know that I can just plug in SMB3 or RE4 for a good time instead of several hours in several games.

The most common response in my mind to playing new games is "Man, i could have played Warcraft 3 (or any other game i like) instead". I feel the same about food. I have tried enough different types of food to just rotated between them. I do not feel the need to experience new things in categories where I'm already content with what I know. Books and movies is some categories where I absolutely want new content. Outdoor activities is another. While people, I'm fine knowing the ones I know.

I'd stick with what I'm familiar with. I already know I like those games, and I'm willing to replay a good chunk of them on the regular, especially older games because of the lower time investment needed for a single playthrough. Conversely, with games I haven't played, I have no idea what I'll like or dislike, plus it means giving up on all of the games that are already my all-time favorites without knowing if I'll find any games that I'll like as much as those.
