Forums - Gaming - FPS enjoyers, which was the greatest era? (and why)

Since I haven't seen anyone praise it yet, the 2010s had some bangers as well; Halo Reach, Doom 2016, Titanfall 2, Bioshock 2 and Infinite, Wolfenstein the New Order + Old Blood, Bulletstorm, Battlefield 1, Black Ops 1 + 2, Shadow Warrior...

Sequels and reimaginings can be great, sometimes greater than their predecessors, quality has nothing to do with whether a game is a new IP or not.

True, not going to argue with that.

But I stand by them bringing nothing new to the table and the genre being stale. Heck platformers and shoot ‘em ups have more variety than the FPS genre.

Now I’m not saying newer games are bad, just that every time I play them I feel like I’ve played it before (and also there is a certain feel to games built on, for example, the first Unreal engine that newer games can’t mimic.

I think the current gen is good because indies have been doing some excellent boomer shooters as they are called. Dusk, Ion fury, prodeus, boltgun and project warlock to name a few

I would argue these games and others did evolve the genre, from Titanfall 2's fantastic mobility, to Bioshock Infinite creating one of gaming's best companion characters, to Doom 2016 and Dusk fusing old school sensibilities with the new possibilities allowed by modern hardware.

I certainly wouldn't describe these games as stale personally, I'd say they brought quite a lot of freshness to the table.

Yeah lotta great shooters that generation, the 360 had some bangers of its own too like Halo 3/4/Reach, COD2, Metro 2033, Prey...

I'm closer to an FPS hater than an FPS enjoyer. I have played fewer hours of FPS games than fingers on my hands. The only two games I have tried is Counter Strike and Halo 2.

But I have watched my friends and siblings play a lot of FPS games and for me there is a clear winner in Unreal Tournament. Would put the golden age of FPS right around the millennium, late 1990 to early 2000.

In the end, the only ones that really stuck with me are multiplayer FPS games: CS 1.6, Source, and GO (2... ugh). Soldier of Fortune II. UT99. BF2, BFBC2, BF3, BF1, BF5. Quake 3. COD4 PROMOD (a quick nod to Battalion 1944). PlanetSide 2. Red Orchestra 2. DOD Source. Titanfall 2. Killzone 2. Rust. ShootMania. TF2. XIII. Return to Castle Wolfenstein, PUBG.

I still play: UT99 (instagib), CS2, BF1 and 5, PUBG, Rust, and occasionally COD4 promod.

For single-player FPS games, I'd say HL1, HL2, Far Cry 3/4/5, Titanfall 2, Wolfenstein, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, DOOM, FEAR, Metroid PRIME etc.

I'd say 1999–2009 was my era

ps: Big thanks to Duke Nukem for triggering my motion sickness—I simply can't play most FPS games (Cyberpunk, I really wish I could've loved you :().
