Forums - Gaming - FPS enjoyers, which was the greatest era? (and why)

I've had little time to explore VR games so far, but I would certainly be open to seeing more VR support in games, including different treatments like you said. I guess price is the main factor hindering VR adoption, but the nausea issues must not help either.

I elaborated on MGSV a bit more in my response to the other quote in my previous post, but basically being a stealth game, the amount of noise you make matters a lot, and it just happens that noise-wise the sweet spot for approaching people from behind is between the speeds allowed by keyboard controls. If I recall correctly, the speeds supported by the keyboard controls aren't useless either, but the game would really just benefit from more control in movement speed. I think I learned this only after playing the PS4 version a good while after I'd played the game originally on PC.

Ah, like Hitman WoA. I played that on PSVR2, minus the miming yank and not able to get the gun out of my crotch while sitting, amazing VR experience lol. Don't need guns there as throwing is OP, eye tracked assisted aim (gaze throwing) is godlike haha.

One two done

Possibly a hot take, but I reckon there are a ton of great console FPS, a ton of great FPS post the 2000s, and a number of really good COD games.

As the person who brought up the matter, I don't object to this at all. I don't have much experience with console shooters due to my dislike of the control method, so I can't really speak much about them. I just find it curious that it would seem that for some reason or another, most replies to this thread seem to prefer earlier shooters. As an anecdote, I like both old and new Wolfenstein games, and while the most recent games in the series have been good too, I do prefer the older ones. I think it might have something to do with the snappier controls, but it's been a while since I've played any Wolfenstein games, so I could be remembering the more recent ones incorrectly. I do know for certain that the older ones definitely had very snappy controls though.

Demographically, VGChartz is made up mostly of older gamers, (myself among them) so it stands to reason many of us prefer the earlier stuff from the 90s and 2000s.

That said, though I do count early FPS titles like Doom and Perfect Dark among my all time favourites, I do also love a lot of newer stuff like Doom Eternal, Dusk, Prodeus, Titanfall 2, and Turbo Overkill.

Ahhh a "real" game!

Oh and sorry for potato image compression on the screen shot in the previous post, forum has a 500 kb limit to images :P

Oh and while I was on it I installed UT2004 too!

And lastly this is something that hasn't been running on a computer of mine for at least 25 years, och and this game is better than HL1

Loving this thread. For me the Golden Era starts with Turok on the 64, is kept strong with GoldenEye, the other Turoks and PD, going all the way through UT, HL1, the first Counter Strike (so many nights on LAN sessions) and peaks with HL2, ending the era on a great high.

I feel like all the high quality indie FPS games is gonna make this decade the best for the genre yet. There's more variety than ever really.

Yeah the "boomer" shooter renaissance over the last few years has produced a ton of bangers; Dusk, Prodeus, Turbo Overkill, Severed Steel, Sprawl Zero, Warhammer 40K Boltgun, Amid Evil, Ion Fury...

Right when looking at the genre as a whole there's still the modern military shooter affair seen in COD and Battlefield but there's also more ones than ever that go for an old school approach while others offer a mix of old and new like the recent Doom games so there's something for all kinds of FPS fans.
