Lotta great calls here.
For me, it's Donkey Kong Country 2; the atmosphere, the music, the gameplay variety, it's just solid gold.

Y’know, I’ve heard so much praise thrown around about this game. I had a blast playing DKCReturns & Tropical Freeze, but only enjoyed DKCountry (OG). Is DKC2 really that much better? May have to give it a spin one day if so.

The core gameplay is quite similar to DKC1, but 2 has better level design, more variety, and the duo feels more nimble and agile due to Dixie being more so compared to Donkey Kong in DKC1.
To me at least it's one of those sequels that improves over the first in almost every way. It's still cut from the same cloth though.

You simply cannot compete with a game that has music this good (Athletic Theme, Course Clear Theme, etc.), with such creative ideas thrown every-which-way (2D platformer mixed with 2D shooter components, the creative damage mechanic of needing to recapture Baby Mario within 30s across a level, that one puff level, etc.), all while being the best looking 2D game produced prior to the N64 generation by a landslide margin. Easily among the greatest games ever made, far surpassing anything Mario World ever did IMO. |
This is my choice as well. Been my personal GOAT for about 30 years now. Incredible game.

Yeah, I think it's pretty easy pick for SMB 3. The replayability is endless. And I could not play that game for 30 years and still know all the secrets :P A good second and more modern pick would be Hollow Knight. But that does not have the same replayabillity and might be to difficult when I'm 60 or 70 ;) I'm sure I could still play SMB 3 when i'm 80. Hehe.

Yeah SMB3 is right up there as well, the amount of ideas, variety, and secrets they managed to pack into an 8-bit game is genuinely mind-blogging, like I can't imagine how insane it must have been to play that in 1989.
