What's the greatest 2D game ever made in your view, and why?

Yeah SMB3 is right up there as well, the amount of ideas, variety, and secrets they managed to pack into an 8-bit game is genuinely mind-blogging, like I can't imagine how insane it must have been to play that in 1989.
