Forums - Microsoft - Bloomberg: Xbox profit margin just 3%, Major Layoffs next month.

I love how porting your exclusives to PC has backfired on both Xbox and Sony. Xbox is losing console sales like crazy. Sony finally backpedaled on it, realizing that single-player exclusives sell consoles.

Gears E-Day's budget is reportedly $400 million+ and some people are claiming it's "normal" for a modern AAA game lmao.

Are there estimates how much the work on the now scrapped PS5 version cost?

This is mostly gamepass and now hardware prices going up (ram/ssd's).

Xbox have invested over $20bn in xbox (gamepass/subsidies for hardware) in the past 5 years.
And revenue has been going down.  That basically means you wasted 20bn.
(factor in the $76bn they also spent on ABK... that is alot of money, to see revenue shrink)

Meanwhile Sony has said they have had the most profitable generation ever, with the PS5.
So Sony might have pocketed like $20bn in profits, while the reverse is true for Xbox.

But yeah.... Sony tried with PC, and it was like 3% of their revenue or something small.
The loss in brand and potential new PS players, you could have lost to pc, might mean its not worth it.
As much as people might dislike it, platforms need exclusives.

Porting is a relatively cheap process. The development of a PS5 version won't have cost them too much, probably under $10m. It's more the lost sales from not relasing it that will cost them $100m+.

Porting Ratchet Rift Apart to PC cost only $2.6m.

Really have to question what they're throwing away that $100m+ for when their console sales are in the toilet and they don't even have the parts to manufacture them.

How has it backfired?

MS is still releasing all their games on PC. They just don't want them on PS or Switch.

PC allowed Sony to recoup development costs while also potentially getting audiences interested in their IP.

PC has served it's purpose for both MS and Sony, and will continue to do so into the foreseeable future, albeit in different ways.

It didn't backfire. Xbox makes a lot of money off PC. Playstation made some money off PC. You think Playstation sold 90+ million consoles because of their exclusives? I think the reason Playstation stopped doing PC ports for their single player games is because they're embarrassed that PC gamers didn't care about them. I guarantee you if Playstation put their games day one on PC it would not affect their console sales at all.

It backfired by slowing down console sales. Consoles make their money by getting people invested in the ecosystem and then getting 20% of every 3rd party game sold. Fewer console numbers = less revenue in the future.

Exactly how much money does Xbox make off PC? Does Xbox release sales data for PC games? How about revenue data and profit data?

Playstation stopped doing ports for their PC games because they didn't sell well enough to justify it. Like you said, PC Gamers didn't care about them.

It would appear, once again, we're seeing the consequences of Gamepass and the "expansion" of their gaming division. Their business model was never going to be sustainable, I think everyone except Microsoft realized this.

Sony will not release the exclusives on the PC for some time, since Helix and Steam Machine can play Sony games on Steam. It would be a financial disaster if their best games are available on the competing platforms too. It is not about weak sales of those games released on Steam.
