The PS3 actually was that bad, there's years of compromised ports that demonstrate this. 360 was simply easier to develop for, which is better for developers as it saves them time and money.

If the PS3 was actually developer friendly, then games would have looked amazing in 2007 instead of years later.

There are actually quite a few consoles that were difficult to work with; Saturn, N64, PS2, PS3, Wii U.

This video from Modern Vintage Gamer on the issue is really good BTW (don’t know if it supports my points though :P ). Also his channel is generally really good!

I just watched it but it basically ends with him saying programming became easier when Sony released better APIs for the PS3.

Better APIs did help makes things less painful as time went on, yes. The hardware itself though was just highly heterogenous/asymmetrical compared to 360 and later consoles, which meant it took more work to optimise games for.

There's a reason why Sony abandoned this approach going forwards and instead adopted a much simpler hardware setup for PS4 and PS5.

Sony made a point of declaring how PS4 was easier to develop games for, and developers echoed this, praising the system for its ease of use.

While we talk about the PS3 being difficult, wasn’t the PS2 also considered difficult?

Yeah, like PS3 (though not to the same extent) on PS2 you had to balance tasks in parallel between multiple different processing units.

Gamecube/Xbox/Dreamcast were more straightforward if I recall correctly.

While we talk of that generation the tricks used to get Morrowind running on the Xbox where really cool.

Tangent: Bethesda where is my rerelease of Morrowind! It’s the best Elderscrolls game and all you can do is to rerelease Skyrim and oblivion over and over and over again.

Do you find, overall, that you prefer the generations that were closely contended, or the generations where one console dominated, and why?

I consider the PS2 gen to be one of... if not the best.
Same with the PS4 gen (and Switch).

I guess I just like Sony and Nintendo doing well.
So I think I'm actually okay with a One-sided victory.

This gen, is just bad management top level.
I cannot believe Sony wasted so much time, trying like ~13 live service games.... that seemingly all flopped or didn't even launch.
If they had just focused on strong single player titles, I think they would have been ahead by more, and the general "feel"
of the generation would be better (ei. Happier user bases on the PS5 side).

The PS3 gen was competitive,.... but I don't look back nearly as fondly at the PS3 as I do the PS1/2/4.

Why would I care about what other consoles are doing? I'm happy riding with Playstation and that's it.
