I'll never miss a chance to complain about The Last of Us 2. Horrible story, treating its audience like children, cheap unearned moral victories, the trans child stuff, questionable character motivation, the utterly unimaginative gameplay scenarios compared to part one,... Way too bold in some areas, way too timid in others. It does not work as a stand alone game. It only works (a little bit) because of part one. I truly hate most things about it. And I think it left a sour taste in many fans mouths, to the point where Naughty Dog really has to earn a lot of trust back with Intergalactic. The critics did not reflect that whatsoever. Most all reviews coming from actual publications raved about how daring and awesome it is. Strong disconnect between the fans and the critics.

The story is debatable, but gameplay-wise, Part 2 is much better than Part 1. I'm one of those guys who played Part 1 just a couple of months before Part 2, and honestly, it felt ancient in comparison

The combat is much more fluid, with the addition of dodge and prone mechanics. The level design is more open and expansive, offering more to explore. Indoor areas also provide better opportunities to hide and strategize during encounters, which makes stealth much more enjoyable

Maybe the PS5 version of Part 1 makes them feel more equal I wouldn't know, since I never played it. But as someone who wasn't a big fan of the first game (I'd rate it around 7/10) and has no emotional attachment to it or its characters, I found Part 2 much more fun to play

I didn't play it, but I've seen a lot of people saying that the critics were too harsh on Metroid Prime 4

I mean… to be totally honest? It sits at an 80OC. The game really is a mess, and I’d say 8/10 really fits what I feel this game deserves.

Great idea for a thread! Most 2D games in the 5th gen got panned just for being 2D. Etrian Odyssey games have gotten great overall review scores but there's always a few 40-year-old freelance writers that haven't played anything other than CoD/Madden that hate Etrian Odyssey games.

Lots of 3D Sonic games aren't nearly as bad as the critics says. I strongly disagree with Sonic and the Black Knight sitting at 54 Meta.

One of the best graphics and soundtracks on Wii, story is emotional and very well made. Also Sonic has the best personality in the whole series in this title, where we can see that he is more than just a "radical" guy. I don't know if gameplay really suffers, because I played it on emulator, but I couldn't find anything really bad about it. But I know a bunch of friends who enjoyed it on console too.

I wouldn't rate it below 7/10.

Disney Epic Mickey. Yeah it was a little bit janky but it had so much creativity and heart.

Fatal Frame 4. Brilliant slow-burn horror with an immaculate atmosphere.

Both reviewed poorly but I had a great time with them.

It was... a lot janky. And I say that as a guy who regularly wears an Oswald hoodie.

But, the modern remake of Epic Mickey is pretty good. It's still not amazing gameplay, but it gets it to the point where the gameplay is not actively getting in the way of all the stuff the game is doing well. Was hoping that it might do well enough for a third, but sadly it seems like that wasn't the case.

It's been 16 years since I played it, I do remember it being jankier than average, but a certain amount of jank was commonplace back then, a lot of 7th gen games had control/camera systems that aren't as polished as modern games. I never played the remake.

Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness and (to a lesser extent) 64.

Not perfect games, and the camera could be a nightmare. But they were an ambitious attempt to bring Castlevania into 3-D, and had great atmosphere and music. Unfortunately, they also came out in the shadow of Ocarina of Time. I guess I could also say the same for Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon, though that didn't get reviewed too badly. It was probably my favorite third party N64 game (even counting Rare). It did 3-D Zelda before Ocarina of Time did.

I think the problem with the Castlevanias from N64 is that they are good games, but overshadowed by Symphony of the Night from PS1/Saturn, which is often remembered by fans as the best Castlevania ever made.

I will name a PC title.

Half-Life is not worth the 96 it hs on MC. It’s not a bad game but isn not that good either. It wasn’t as inovative as people try to make it out to be in the story telling department. It wasn’t the best looking game even if it wasn’t bad looking. The gameplay is very linear with little to no exploration and no one talka about the horrible platforming in the alternative dimension level in the late game.

Unreal is the better game that was released the same year.

This is a hill I’m willing to die on!

Yeah speaking of Half Life, this will possibly be a hot take, but Half-Life 2 is insanely overrated IMO.

Granted, I didn't play it til like 2016 on 360 so maybe the graphical spectacle at the time made it more impactful, but it was an absolutely miserable experience for me. The pacing was glacial and shooting felt limp and unsatisfying.

I got as far as that horrible, horrible canal escape that should have lasted 5 minutes but just dragged on and on endlessly, and I just couldn't take it anymore and quit, never to return.
