Forums - Gaming - Games You Want to love, but can't

I really had to dig deep on this one, because it's not a question I had previously considered.

I think Doom 64 would fit the bill. On the N64, it suffers from frustrating controls and dim lighting. I couldn't really engage with the core mechanics in the way I wanted to. Thankfully, the modern port fixes those issues and allows the greatness of the original to shine through.

Pretty much all the 80's Sierra adventures. Legendary names I grew up hearing about and the very first PC game I ever bought (from a mate) was Police Quest 3, huge nostalgia.
But all 80's and early 90's King's Quests, Police Quests, Space Quests, Larrys and others (except the ones for children like Mother Goose) I've had to just see with a walkthough rather than actually play.

Gotta join the Sekiro train. I wanted to like it but the gameplay is way too rigid for my taste, very uncharacteristic of Fromsoft games tbh. It doesnt help that the lore/worldbuilding really didnt interest me.

R2D2, ive tried to reestart it multiple times but i find too tedious and boring.

TOTK, while i do like it, it gave me none of the sense of wonder and joy that BOTW did, so whenever i feel like replaying one of them its always BOTW.

Mario Odyssey, tried it, couldnt get into it, felt bored. This is when i decided im no longer interested in Mario games. They dont do it for me anymore.

Mario Kart World. It's a major step down from Mario Kart 8 in most areas. For some reason the controls have been changed enough that it makes the game frustrating to play for me. I played MK8 for over 10 years with no issues, but this one I just cannot get into.

Yeah, same.  I get it is a good game, but just feels, dare I say, a bit boring?  I thought MK8 was much better.  I will play World here and there with the family, but for the most part, meh.

The games I most wanted to love were Mario 64, Wind Waker, and Morrowind.  I would keep playing these games, trying to give them the most chances I could, because I really love 8/16-bit Mario and Zelda and RPGs are my favorite genre.  But the more I tried to love these games, the more I ended up hating them.  Now I find all 3 of these games to be hot garbage that I loathe from the very core of my being.

Ironically, I game I really wanted to hate was Final Fantasy 13.  FF was my favorite series, I bought FF13 on day 1, and it was obvious from the beginning that this game was terrible.  So, I kept playing it in order to make fun of the game and process my hate for it.  But it turns out after you get past the first 20-25 hours, the game actually becomes really good.  I ended up playing FF13 over 100 hours and I was left wanting more.  It's really too bad that such a great game is gatekept behind 20 or so hours of total trash.

Death Stranding 2. I love MGS. I love Kojima's work. But damn... I just can't get into it. It just feels like this uber confusing mailman sim set inside of an LSD trip. I'm only playing through it because I bought it full price at retail but... sigh. Hopefully, I'll change my mind before it's over.

Want to love is hard to think really but maybe the best example is Street Fighter.

I like fighting games, Tekken is one of my favourite series. Star Gladiator is one of my favourite games and has so much fun playing 2 player vs on things like MvC and buy every other MK game. And yet only really played 1 SF game, SNES classic 2 Turbo. I have EX, 3, 4. Played 5 and 6, none of them stick. So I go back to Tekken and every other MK. :P

I felt that way about SF off and on. However, they legitimately did a good job with SF6, and so I play that a alot now.

Tekken, I try to play for a while, but then I end up going back to Virtua Fighter 5, because I greatly prefer the fighting and controls in VF5.

The God of War games.

I like the core gameplay, music, visuals, etc but I just find Kratos such a horrible unlikeable character that it completely puts me off.

A lot of older games (particularly CRPG's) that I didn't grow up with and have aged too much for me to get into now. For instance I keep hearing how great the first two Fallout games are but I just couldn't get into it when I tried it. Would love to see faithful but modernized remakes of games like that, though.
