Forums - Nintendo - What would you like to see in an Ocarina of Time Remake?

Tagged games:

Ocarina of Time is one of those games I have never played, but long to visit someday, so I can’t speak to much on what I would to see changed. Though if it’s anythink like Majora’s Mask,… IDK. Honestly, I think MM is a nearly perfect game. Not much I’d want changed.

You never played Ocarina of Time? This is unexpected

The number 1 and absolute requirement for me to play is: Remove the awful context-sensitive controls, for love of the God use the standard fixed control schema

The other things are more optional:

- Better camera
- Deeper combat (possible if they fix the controls)
- More freedom with movement, though this can jeopard some puzzles
- Make the Hyrule Field/overworld less empty
- Better inventory/item/weaponry management

Probably in the minority here, but I would like them to turn the game into an open world like BOTW. Would be awesome to experience a seamless open world OOT imo.

Remake the assets and better inventory management and camera control.
That is all I need. A pretty minimal remake like OOT 3D.
OOT with Switch 2 graphics would be gorgeous as long as the art style is preserved.

It'd be interesting to see if they would stay very close to the original game, just updating to modern graphics, filling in some content, and updating controls and whatnot, like what IcaroRibeiro listed, or if they'll go with a full reimagining, expanding the game into a modern size with a large teaming Hyrule field to explore, expanding each area of the game to what you'd expect of a modern game and filling it with new quests and features and mechanics and story elements.

On the one hand I don't care about a remake because OoT is so damn good I feel no need to play or even see it remade. On the other hand it'll be interesting (assuming the rumors are true) to see what Nintendo can do to update such a legendary game to a modern standard if they go for a full reimagining.

I think that is what is going to happen, it'll be a smaller BotW experience.

I was talking to a coworker last friday about it, but then what could it do to feel different from BotW and not just a smaller version of it? Which could make it kinda pointless, after 2 BotW games we had in the last 10 years.

Yeah, color me surprised. @firebush03 you need to fix this glaring hole in your resume!

@OP: I'd love to see Nintendo honor the general flow and feel of Ocarina, while introducing modern amenities, expanding in some areas, and streamlining a few things. Specifically:

  • Dual analog controls (just take full advantage of the Switch 2 controller in general)
  • Modern graphics, obviously, but also an art style that captures the whimsy and weirdness of the original
  • Expand on the combat phase. I love the combat in Ocarina (it's dangerous and breathless at times) but it could much more tactical. Maybe elaborate on the shield/deflection mechanic? Introduce a perfect guard or parry system?
  • Speaking of combat, make it easier to pull up alternative weapons on the fly
  • Remove or overhaul the Gerudo stealth sequence
  • Streamline the process to hit 100%. Ocarina is one of the best games ever made, but it can be monotonous if you're aiming for 100%, mostly due to the day-night cycle and the time travel mechanic. I'm loath to remove either of those, so maybe just have a better tracking system?
  • Add more interaction points in towns and in the wilderness. Hyrule Field, for example, shouldn't be crawling with people, beasts, and quest markers (its open, empty vastness is sort of the point) but it could use more landmarks and things to do
  • Keep the perfect music, but introduce some new arrangements that experiment with tempo and/or instrumentation
  • Don't emulate Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom. I adore those games but their design philosophy doesn't mesh with the spirit of Ocarina of Time. Plus, throw the lock-and-key, dungeon-diving Zelda fans a bone, Nintendo

If you want an even bigger surprise, here is a list of all the Zelda games I’ve ever played: Link’s Awakening (NSW), Majora’s Mask, WindWaker, Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Echoes of Wisdom. I’m always just so careful with when I choose to play a Zelda game… I always like to give them my full attention. This is unlike Mario and Pikmin, where I’ve 100% beaten every game several times and over lol.

I’ve held off on revisiting WW and playing TP b/c I’ve been waiting for an NS2 release, I held off from OoT b/c there’s always been rumors of a remake (and then they released a whole Lego Set based on OoT… and now a movie seemingly centered around OoT), and so SS/LTTP/LBW have always been in my sight.
